Is your car an '01 or a 1.6? It can't be both.

For $1k you cannot get there, but you can get close. You will need an ECU capable of controlling the larger injectors you will need, spark, and also VVT if you have an '01. I currently recommend the MS3 Basic from MS Labs.

You will also need bigger injectors because stock ones are almost maxxed out at stock power levels ($150-400). With the ECU and injectors, you will require a wideband O2 sensor ($150-200) to tell the ECU what is going on and to be able to tune for more power and better cruising economy, too.

The stock clutch won't handle a power increase without slipping under acceleration, so you should budget for an upgrade ($250-400) as a necessary supporting modification before the turbo.

Then the turbo manifold $250-600,
the downpipe $150-250,
the intercooler $80-200,
the intercooler piping, silicone hoses, and t-bolt clamps $150-200,
the oil feed line $50-80,
oil return line $15-30,
oil pan bit, tap, and fitting $40,
GM IAT sensor $35,
Blow off valve (optional) $40-240,
Inconel exhaust studs $50-150,

oh yeah, the turbo itself $100-1500.

My low end prices are for used and abused parts and the high end are new and nicer quality parts. These are pretty much the bare necessities to get started on a basic turbo build on a Miata. If you actually have the 1.6 engine ('89-93) then you could use a secondhand MS1 or MSPNP ECU that can be had for $300-500 instead of the more advanced model. With the 1.6 you could also probably find the bandaids solution (RRFPR, MSD, O2 clamp) in place of an MS1 ECU for the same money but have no control over fuel and spark and get terrible performance and mileage (not good at all). Anyone who has has both will never go back with a bandaid solution.

But just adding the MS3 Basic, injectors, and wideband O2 will give you a decent performance bump and bring timing and fueling under your control (MS3 has launch control, traction control, and all sorts of other built-in toys, too). After mastering that, and picking up the rest of your parts as good deals when they arise, you will be ready for the rest of your build.

I hope this helps.
