Autocross is like doing a miniature track event in a parking lot with cones outlining the course. It isn't usually fast enough speeds to really hurt anything but is good practice for the big tracks. It is a stepping stone event for a lot of people looking to play on the big tracks one day. It is a good experience if you get in with a good group.

And when you get ready, NASA-NE is running High Performance Driver's Education (HPDE) on race tracks near you all the time. They are running on the road course at Pocono in July and Watkins Glen in April and September. They take beginners, and automatics. All you will need to add to your stock Miata is a rollbar and a Snell SA 2005 or 2010 rated helmet and you are golden. They have beginner sessions at every event and work on teaching you how to drive safely on the track at speed. And there are several women in HPDE at every single event, too, in case you are concerned about that. Here is a link: NASA NorthEast Region - Safe, Affordable Way to get on the Race Track

I helped a friend install a Hard Dog M2 Hardcore Double Diagonal rollbar on Sunday afternoon in the driveway. It took about 4-5 hours including trimming the package shelf carpet ever so slightly. The good thing about the Hard Dog rollbars is if you get a trackday-legal one it will always be worth most of what you paid for it. Used ones are always in demand and hard to find.

Thank yoiu...is there anything special I should watch out for if I do find a used one...other than the obvious possible damage?

Just able sure if you get a hard dog that it has all the brackets and bolts. Also, if you ever think you may want a hard top some day, look for the hard Dog models that support the hardtop.

The double diagonal models do restrict your rear view a bit just as a note, but the cars look great with them installed. Six is right, it's about a 4-6 hour job especially if you have done it before. N

Used ones can be found for ~$400 if you keep an eye on the various forums. I'll let you know if I spot one for sale.
