Default NB Bose Unit in an NA

EDIT THIS THREAD WAS CREATED FROM ANOTHER DISCUSSION!
--The idea here is to findout if a 99 NB Bose headunit will fit a 95 miata--

Edit 2: Upon further reading, it looks like I can't use the Bose radio, it uses some sort of special amps unless i'm mistaken.
Well, its not a "special amp", its a "special" speakers. the bose speakers are .5ohm speakers so they require an amplifier that can handle a low impedance speaker (as opposed to 8ohm home speakers and 4ohm/2ohm car speakers).

The bose headunit itself is pre-amp output (low-level signal that you input to any aftermarket amplifer). The nice thing about them is that you can have a stock looking radio, but have a really nice audio setup. Less likely to get stolen and all that.

Anyways, I have the amplifier too if you do want them all (and the speakers also). the tape deck is an independent unit (its single din also, combining into a complete double din setup) and connects with a cable (which i have also).

If that all sounds like a lot of trouble, then no worries.

Doesn't sound like too much trouble, I like to get creative. I had read a few naysayers telling that the Bose unit is not compatible, it's too hard, my vagina hurts, etc. but if that's not the case, I'm in.

Is the amp big or is is part of the unit itself?

nah its actually about 6"x6"x2", its only usable with the bose speakers.

so you can:

1) get the complete bose setup, with the amp and speakers.
2) get the bose headunit and get an aftermarket amp + speakers.

I will be honest with you, the bose setup sucks. Its boomy midrange and the trebel can be quite excessive in the small cabin.

According to these NA guys, the 96-97 is the only true single DIN sized headunit on the NA. I don't really know what that means, but one says it may require modifying the dash? If you don't mind I am going to split part of this thread off into a new thread since this is no longer a for sale discussion. I will PM you details, I can take measurements if you like.

The NB Bose headunit has pre-amp outputs, can I use the Bose headunit in an NA miata for a stock-ish look?

Question: Is an amp required to use the Bose headunit with aftermarket speakers?

Yes, the bose headunit is low-level voltage signal. Comparable to having a high-level (ie out to speaker) signal from a headunit and running it through a LOC. or having an aftermarket headunit WITHOUT the built in amplifier.

You need an external amplifier if you don't use the bose amp and the speakers.

Many of you say thats the dumbest thing ever, but I say you are all silly.

A completely stock headunit with low level signals allows you to run any amplifier and speaker, which allows for a much cleaner signal than trying to use a LOC or having a gay multi-color headunit that looks out of place (not that they are gay, I just hate how I can never color match my headunit with OEM lighting...its fabulous, I know).

btw, if anyone can add in any other info on the bose unit that would be great. I am afraid there is some special crap on the headunit or something, because I would think people would love a pre-amp OEM-looking headunit.
