I'm looking at buying a junk first gen miata with either the 1.6 or 1.8 and then rebuilding my 2.0 and swapping that out to keep costs low. my main concerns are bolt patterns on the trans bell housing and if the engine bay has enough volume.

 

The protege engine you are asking about shares no bellhousing compatibility and I believe the oil pan sump is in the wrong place.
