Lube your convertible top joints. NOW.
Seriously folks, I haven't touched mine in the 10.5 years I've owned my 2001. I was installing a new top (first new top was a dud) and while I had the frame separated, I sprayed all of the joints with some white lithium grease and moved them all back and forth (particularly that last bow with the springs and straps!) until they were smooth.
The top now raises and lowers SO EASILY I can't believe it. It sits flat on the package shelf instead of sticking up above the trunk lid. SO WIN. If you lube while on the car, you'll need some paper or something to put behind so you dont get the goop all over the inside of the top. I'm not sure if it stains or discolors the headliner or whatnot. your pal, y8s |
Hmmm... I may have to try this. I've been trying to figure out how to get my top to line up flat with the windshield.

Never thought about this but it makes sense.
