Even the plucky Mazda MX-5 isn't safe from the temptation of a black edition. Mazda has just rolled out a Black Tuned Roadster in Japan, complete with a little more style than your run-of-the-mill convertible. The package is largely aesthetic thanks to the addition of a Brilliant Black retractable hard top roof and door mirrors as well as Gun Metallic 17-inch alloy wheels. Inside, both the seats and the steering wheel are covered in black leather with sand-coloured contrasting stitching. Mazda is only offering the Black Tuned Roadster in three colours; Spirited Green Metallic, Velocity Red Mica and Crystal White Pearl Mica. But not... ummm... black.

As befitting a retractable hard top model, the Black Tuned Roadster comes as loaded as they get with standard gear like a Bose sound system and heated front buckets. Mazda isn't saying how many of the models it plans to build, but we do know that base models come with a six-speed manual transmission while a six-speed automatic is also available. Japanese buyers can expect to shell out ¥2,904,762 for the machine (around $39,871 CAD at current conversion rates).

I'm curious as to how many people would actually purchase the automatic transmission. Seems like a niche car that caters mostly to enthusiasts, and I don't know many who would desire an auto.

But I really like that green!

I think I want to start tracking an NC...Maybe I can pick up a playboy cup one and strap a turbo onto it.

You maybe suprised at how many are autos. I was tire kicking the new ones, and was stuned at how few manual equiped cars there were on the lot.

What really pisses me off is that I can not get one with roll up windows. I hate having a car that I hot rod with power windows....I just hate it....

I suppose most people that would go racing would rip all that ---- out and gut the doors anyway.

Most NBs and NCs around here are driven by 40-60 year old women. 20 something year old males aren't buying them new because they don't have street cred. Now that the RX8 is dead what Mazda needs is a performance version of the MX5 with the hp of a speed3, decent width tires, bigger brakes, bigger sways and stronger suspension rates off the shelf. And there needs to be a loaded version of it and a stripper version. They would move some volume.

vote for 2014 mazdaspeed MX-5:
(sample news article)
using the current 2.3 DISI, mazda has fixed the turbo oil seal woes and implanted the 2.3 litre powerhouse into the newely lightened MX-5 chassis. For 30k you can buy the absolute roadster king, surely s2000 fans are peeing their pants right now.

God, I love that MS3 2.3 DISI.
