I bought my first Miata last week from New Mexico as a project car for my son and I to work on. Brought it back to Denver (5,200 feet above sea level) and it sounds good, but does not run very well. Seems to hesitate on acceleration, and there are times it will not maintain idle. Seems like it is really running rich.

The guy I bought it from mentioned there was a MSPNP2 on the car, but could not (or didn't want to) tell me what tune is on the car.

I tried to get an emissions test on the car and it failed. HC was 2.2 (limit is 1.2) and CO was 38 (limit is 15).

I am a car guy, but new to Miata's and tuners. There is a USB cable in the vehicle attached to the MSPNP2, but not sure what software I need, and how to restore it to a state where it can pass emissions. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Vehicle: 1996 Mazda MX-5 Miata. Naturally asperated, still has the cat on it, aftermarket exhaust with no real muffler...Still has functional A/C. Besides a K&N air filter and after market exhaust, car appears to be stock (emphasis on appears...)
