Default 1990 brake calipers

I need to replace my rear right brake caliper. The mechanic told me I should replace both sides, even though nothing is wrong with the left rear. His theory is the brakes should be replaced in pairs. I have new pads all around. Do you agree with the mechanic, in that I need to replace calipers on both sides of the rear of the car rather than just the side that is not functioning correctly?

1990 with 212,000 miles.

They do not need to be replaced in pairs. They either work or they don't. Shocks, yes. Brake pads, yes. Brake rotors, yes. Calipers, no.
