92' Cold air intake
 

Was looking at the K&N 57-0047 but just want to make sure it will make a difference in power and fuel economy. I'm also a newbie when working on a car so are there any suggestions on a easy cold air intake install kit that performs well - better than the stock air box.

I looked up the Randall but that seems like a lot for someone not so inclined.

AFAIK intakes don't do much for our cars, especially if its just replacing the box with a cone filter.

what does anyone suggest then? I do want it to make a difference....affordably and easily to install. :) don't we all? :D

If you want to do something, you can get the filter adapter and a cone filter for probably less than $50

+ a cone filter from your local auto parts store.

Again, its not going to do much but make more sound. Are you just looking to gain a few HP or what? Unfortunately I/H/E dont do much for the 1.6 especially if its otherwise stock. Your money is probably better spent else where, like suspension or saved for something bigger.

Even better fuel economy than I already get. A little more power would be nice as well.

Oh yeah. Don't forget tires... If you have shitty tires, swapping for something 1/2 way decent will make a huge difference.

Yeah think about the most useful parts.. Air intakes are not that important and they don't do much in our cars. Spend on parts that are valuable and those that would improve the car's power and performance.

Don't bother messing with the intake unless you have an aftermarket ECU to handle the changes in metered air flow. You WILL lose fuel economy and low range torque on the 1.6L. Mazda did a great job of overengineering many parts on these engines, the intake tract being one of them. Listen to Brain, he knows his stuff. Suspension and handling is the best bang for the buck on these cars. Work on driving skills and learn just how fast a Miata can be in stock form. Intake, exhaust, and all the typical Honda mods really don't pay off on these cars. Forced Induction is the cheapest way to get a meaningful boost :p in power. Unless you just live your life 1/4 mile at a time and really really need to beat that Camry to the next stop light, then you should trade for a Mustang.

Diesel couldn't really have said it better then that. Being able to drive (handle) a car to it's fullest and knowing it's maximum potential is far more enjoyable then driving a car that's a few HP faster and louder. Save the money that you'd spend on over priced I/H/E, or cheap ebay knockoffs, and get yourself some suspension mods. This is coming from someone with both an I/H/E setup and suspension setup, on his 3rd modified car, Suspension upgrades will make you fall in love with your car again!

or find yourself a decently cheap 1.8L and give yourself a better platform for future gofast mods.
