dipstick tube problem

4 Attachment(s)
I have a 1995 miata base model and was leaking oil from where my dipstick tube goes into the oil pan. So I pulled the tube and bought a replacement o ring.

My question is does the o ring go between the oil pan and the dipstick tube or does the o ring go around the dipstick tube.

I ask because i keep trying to put the o ring around the tube to create a seal but while trying to insert the tube into the inlet hole it keeps pushing the o ring up the tube. The black ring on the tube in the first picture appears to be metal not rubber it cannot be removed.

i have attached pictures to explain the process i have been trying and the last picture is where the o ring keeps ending up.

any information is appreciated thank you

Did you figure it out? I'm guessing to replace the flat plastic/rubber existing one.

I did, that flat back piece was just a hardened o ring. I broke it off and it’s stopped leaking after replacing it with the new o ring .
