Heater Hose Issue on 1992 Automatic

Yep heater Hose went out. Mechanic saying three hundred bucks because it you gotta take off stuff to get to it. Also said were it goes into the manifold it needs a new O-ring.

I realize it's a pain but it sounds like a pretty easy job for a guy to do himself.
I know the ignition pack has to come off.

THOUGHTS???????????

Thanks guys.

simple job. you can do it.

dieselmiata 02-23-2012 11:21 PM

DONT pay anyone to do it. It's a 15 dollar hose, and an hour or two of your time depending on how handy you are with a wrench. Make sure to cut the old hose off from the nipple at the firewall and don't try to pull it off. The nipple is very easy to crush and will break even if you only have the strength of a 12 year old girl. Cut/peel off > grab and yank.

Unplug connectors near the coil pack and it's only a few bolts to remove it. Can you actually see the leak? Pics?

Oh yeah! It completely burst on me sitting at a red light. Coolant gushing everywere. Guy on youtube recommends those hoses to be silicone ones. If I do that I gotta buy them online, cause no one in my neck of the woods keeps them in stock.

hahaha $300? dude I did both my heaterhoses in about 45 minutes for <$20 (I bought the hoses in a kit).

The hardest part was cutting the old hoses off since they were melted on pretty much.

Get the OEM hoses. They're cheaper and are proven to last forever and a day. The silicone will work but the typical Chinese made silicone hoses do not hold up to the heat very well. YMMV.

I hate silicone hoses.

but you love silicone of a different type? Usually found in the upper bosoms of certain adult content stars and some models of the "super" variety?

I seriously don't care about any silicone, except the type found in electronic devices...It is only the second most abundant element on Earth...so I kinda like it here.

Factory hose lasted 20 years. What the hell do you plan to do with this one that it needs to last longer?

lol.

^I think he is just is just mentioning the silicone suggestion. No harm in asking really, which our responses seem to indicate that there is no real need for the silicone hose (if it even does anything).

I track my car quite frequently and I can tell you, silicone is not needed for this application at all.
