Making space! Pink 92
 

Hey y'all,

My names Brooke I live in VA and I drive a pink 92 NA I affectionately call Barbie..

I'm just getting into engine/performance work on Barbie - as everything I had done before was solely exterior modifications - and I was wondering just what under the hood could I get rid of? I'm trying to make space and minimize. I got rid if the coolant overflow and a couple small pieces.

Also, what are some easy engine mods I could do here at home? My finances are limited, but I've heard there's many things you can tinker with in an MX5 just for fun.

Bump the base timing up from 10 degrees to 15 degrees and the engine will be slightly peppier.

You need the coolant overflow bottle. It is a mechanical necessity with the way the cooling system is designed.

You can ditch the power steering if your car was equipped with it. It frees up power. Then re-align the car to have 3.5-3.8 degrees of caster to reduce steering effort.

You could go to a lighter weight flywheel next time you change the clutch. That makes the car rev much more quickly.

You need to know the rear differential is weak in the '90-'93 cars and can fail without warning. The '94 and up rear differentials are much stronger.

If your car is equipped with aftermarket wheels, make sure they are lightweight because they make a big difference in acceleration and handling.

An aftermarket ECU can allow you to delete the MAF and to tune the car for more power.

Was your car at the Gap two years ago? I remember seeing and photographing a very impressive pink Miata there. That was the ONLY miata my wife wanted to own!

I'm interested in the ecu. Because I could put a CAI and not have to relocate it. Where can I find these mods?

A Megasquirt ECU is the most common unit for Miatas. It is available in several different versions. The older one is the MS1, which is what I have. There is an MSPNP which is related to the MS1, then there is an MS2, MSPNP2, MS3x, MS3, and more. You can pick them up used or new. Our sister site Miataturbo.net will have them show up in the classifieds reasonably often but you need to make sure it is the right year for your car (sometimes there are a couple of years of compatibility together). They can be a bit tough on newbies over there, so be warned! The places to buy new ones are DIY Autotune or MS Labs.
