pull motor or remove with subframe
 

I have read a couple of articles about pulling a motor and removing subframe at the same time
If you are going to replace the engine and transmaission as well as the subframe,would you do all of it together or would you still break them apart
Add to this what height do you need to clear the motor and all if you did it in one piece
If only doing one or the other then I would not pull the engine with subframe but since I am thought I would ask

I have never pulled a motor, but i believe if i were going to pull the motor and the subframe i would do it in 2 pieces. pull motor, jack car up higher and drop the subframe. but thats just my two cents :sign0134:

Don't know. never done it, but I would pull them separately.

i look at it this way, when you drop the motor with the subframe you have to be able clear the bottom of the car with the entire thing. pulling it you dont have to worry about not having enough room to roll the subframe out from underneath the car.

I might be easier to pull the engine or the engine & Trans out of the engine bay than to lift the entire car and slide the subframe and engine out of the bottom.

I know my son and I pulled the engine out using a normal engine hoist to do it. We did unbolt the bell housing from the back of the engine

Think I will go with doing it in two parts
Now the second part of this,I have pulled a lot of engines with the trans attached and with it broke apart at he bell housing .Is there enough room to pull engine and trans as a complete unit or do they have to come apart

^yes, you can pull them together.

You can pull them together if you have a way of changing the angle of the engine+trans. For the oil pan to clear you need to be able to angle it pretty good.

and it was really friggin easy too
me and a buddy literally did it in an afternoon
and that was motor rear subframe, it was everything mechanical
and it was my first motor pull

but to do it like this you would probably need to pull the bumper and radiator to give the motor more clearance

that is what i did but i was tearing the entire car down anyways

now since you have already chosen the other path i will say that most people have told me it is easier to pull the motor with the tranny when removing from above

I had considered doing it in two parts as It looked like you broke th emotor and trans apart .After going back and pausing and doing a slow mo of it I see you left the motor and trans intact
How high did you have to raise it and did you have the jack under the sub frame itself

well i used one jack on the subframe itself and one on the rear of the trannny

but now that i have had to move themotor around a few times
i learned that you can just use one jace on the oil pan and the very rear of the motor and everything will be fairly balanced. i just didnt do that at first because i didnt know it the oil pan could bear all that weight. now when i put the jack on the oil pan i first put a 12x12x1/2 inch piece of particle board on top of the jack to better distribute the weight across the oil pan and have had no problems.

Pulling the engine without the transmission is one of biggest mistakes I've ever done wrenching on my car.

If I was already planning on pulling the motor and dropping the subframe, I might as well do it in one shebang, like in jared's video.

Absolutely, pull the engine and transmission as one unit. The only hard part is getting the chassis high enough so that the tail of the transmission will make the turn around the fire wall. Some decent jack stands will do the trick.

And I have always found it easier to pull the motor without the transmission, especially if I am changing the clutch.

I will, however try the dropped sub frame way if the opportunity arises.

Frt-fun has done me well on this .It already has newer clutch and all the pieces that go with it. I did not ask but take he did seals and pilot bearing at same time were done
Even if I was doing a two part pull I would still pull the motor and trans together.Just wanted to be sure that it could be done
In some cars they will not come out together
I think the boys could hold the front up high enough to roll everything out from under it. They are big strong men and think they can hold it up.
I know one of them when he works with the japanese on a piece of equip. They are always yelling too much tight too much tight. you need to go eek eek not humph hmph
It will make you get on the floor laughing. There will be three or four of them with a big bar prying a piece of equip over and he will go over and just start pushing it

I have done both methods and can say that if you are just doing a motor swap then engine and trans out the top is easier to do. Pull them as a unit and install the same way.
That said, if you have a lift, I pulled the entire front subframe engine and trans out, swapped over the suspension to the Boss Frog sub, installed it and had the car pushed back onto the trailer in 3 hours.
WIth the LS and 6 speed I can break down the accessories and mounts, remove the radiator, remove the headers, and pull the V-8 and trans in an hour. Installing the engine/trans can be done in 10 minutes by myself and then install the rest within the same hour. I have done it too many times already to make sure I had clearence for everything. This is done without jackstands and just a floor jack under the car to get the trans on the cross member.

Drop the sway and pull them together, I do this all the time. On my car with the fat reroute on the back I have to either drop the sway or install without the head.
