Turn signal problem
 

1990 base model. The left turn signal works intermittently (though less and less often). The bulbs are good. The sockets are clean. The ground is good. The flasher unit is good. The right turn signal works fine. When you activate the emergency flashers, only the right side works.

Any ideas on how to clean the contacts on the multifunction switch? Or do I have to deal with the airbag/steering wheel etc?

Or does the problem lie elsewhere?

I would check the wiring back at the left bulb and backwards where it passes through the trunk and down along the drivers side. Something may be rubbing and shorting out. Does you car have a sill plate on the driver side? if so make sure the wiring there isn't pinched.

Zel - You got me pointed in the right direction. I got to into the wiring on the driver's side. I still have not found any bare spots in the wire, but rooting around seems to have brought them back to life. It is a little cold and wet right now (that snow thing) so I cannot really get to serious disassembly. But I really don't want to drive it in the snow either.

No problem, now that you are more sure it is a wiring problem and possibly a short I would be careful and locate and fix that short. A short in a terminal can cause the terminal to overheat and melt and a short under the carpet can certainly cause a fire. Good luck and if you locate it for sure please take some pics and share.

The car is going to be on the sidelines for a few months due to the weather. There are a couple of other things to do as well. I see spending some quality time with a multimeter and tape.
