Turn Signal W/High Beam Issue

Howdy,

I am a new owner of a 91' Miata and I have to say, so far so good! The car came to me in great condition, definitely a labor of love from it’s previous owner. Unfortunately it is having a couple of little quirks...

One of those quirks is when I switch on the right-hand turn signal. Maybe I’m not flicking it properly, but I can’t seem to switch it on at night without turning on the high beams. When I go to push up it clicks on the high beams first, then I have to actually push it further (another click) in order to get the signal to come on; unless the high beams are already on, then the signal comes on right away like normal.

I'm new to the swivel bar, but I tried turning it on in every position possible and I can't get past the high beams. I hate being that annoying car with their high beams on while driving, or having to constantly flash people.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? Is this a manufacture issue or a user(me) issue?

The mechanism may be broken. It is plastic and is 22 years old. Find one in a junkyard and manipulate it to determine if it is functionally different than your own. I have a functional switch assembly if you cannot find a reasonably priced one locally. $20 plus actual freight if you need it. You will need to remove the steering wheel to replace the assembly.
