Ugh, not again... Broken keys...
Im wondering if anyone else has had this issue. I have two keys, one main key, and one valet im assuming because it will not lock/unlock the center console, glove box, or trunk. Both of these keys have a nice little crack on both sides most of the way down the key. This is cause I went to unlock the car, and the key stopped, so I turned it, but since it wasnt all the way in the key twisted and the lock didnt. Currently the car still starts and I can still lock and unlock the car as long as I am very careful.
So, Anyone else with this issue? Is there anything I can do to the keys now? should I just get new ones made before I break my key in the ignition or doors? and finally, Is there anything I can do to the locks to keep this from happening again? lube them, something, ect? Opinions and thoughts. |
I'm assuming these are for your 93 you have listed and they don't use the RFID stuff. I would just go get new keys made, cost you all but a couple bucks.
To keep the key from bending, pick a key that's a little more durable, or has a coated handle etc. |
Yeah, thats what I was going to do, I was just checking to see if anyone had something that would make this less of an issue. Im definitely getting the coated handle ones, thats what one of the two that broke was. but it did seem a good bit sturdier.

LOL, I wasnt, thats the thing. I felt it stop going in and gave it a small turn, but since it wasnt all the way in the fucker just bent. like 20 degrees ish. it wasnt any more force than it takes to normally open my locks, its just that they key wasnt all the way in because something jammed up making it feel like it was all the way in.

I dont know why Mazda made such a deep cut in their keys. It seams that every one of my Miata has had the same issue. If the key is good when I buy the car, I cut a spare key. If not, I get them cut from code at the dealer. Better to have a good key than one cut from unknown generations. Helps resale too!

Hey guys, im new to miatas. I also ring the keys weak....I went to a locksmith and got some keys made...he used a heavier key blank.....

Lol, I honestly havent done anything about this, it hasnt been an issue. I just made sure to push the key all the way in before turning it. Ill get a new one made eventally.

It might be a good idea to open up your door panel and give the locking mechanism a good cleaning. Years of dust collecting in the factory used lubricant can do a number on moving parts.

Yeah, Im gonna give that a shot next time Im working on the car. the pass side manual lock on the inside is a lot easier to move than the drivers. ill mess around with it and see what I cant do to it.

It's too late to post a reply here but you can do anything if you have proper tools to operate on locks. Talking about the keys, you have to rely on locksmith or dealer to get it.

You need not to work on the car if you service it on daily basis, you needn't to hire any locksmith or dealer if it has been serviced regularly.

Open your door panel and make use of the manual to repair it or hire an emergency locksmith near for help.
