what happened to my miata?? can anyone help
-first off it has a welded diff i think broke but idk how to tell.
-with the car running it will still go into gear without using the clutch then it makes a rattling noise (i know its bad for the tranny, i only did that once) -when its in gear with the car off its like its in neutral heres wat happened, I was cruisin with my friend and pulled into this parking to get sideways real quick before i had the chance the bag tire locked up skid to a stop then it was good to roll after that just wouldnt engage into gear. any ideas what that is or anything to check, anything will help right now. thanks in advance |
I'm not quite sure if I'm reading your post right, but if I am, you likely broke your diff. The 90-93 Miata's have a notoriously weak differential, and do not like drifting.

It really does sound like the rear end went on it.

You need a differential. Look for a 1.8 one. more work to install, but rock solid. You might also want to think about changing your suspension geometry as well, the hellaflush thing is murder on the rear components.
But seriously, the 1.6 differential sucks. They are known to grenade from something as simple as a hard launch. |
the 1.6 diff sucks horribly, mine finally died the other day. lasted 20years and 177,xxx miles. finally went while driving normally. good luck with the torsen hunt.

You broke it.

Also if you plan to swap to a 1.8 torsen here are some links i found after digging a little bit since this topic intrigued me
Album Index for album 0012: Differential Swap <- album with pics '91 1.6L rear differential assembly swap for '95 1.8L Torsen - MX-5 Miata Forum Torsen....to 92 - MX-5 Miata Forum repair or replace diff? - Page 2 - MX-5 Miata Forum R&R of a differential Torsen Diff in a 90-93 |
yep thats the sound it makes right before it gets a dead spot and starts locking rear tires. torsen swap is super easy, drop rear end, driveshaft, pull cv axels, put torsen up in, install cv axles for a torsen rear end, install new driveshaft, change speedo gear, test drive.
