Clutch Questions
 

Thinking of replacing the clutch disc/pressure plate on my 2001 Miata 6 speed.
Any thoughts on what parts are best to use.
OEM vs AM
Flywheel ??
Any suggestions would be helpful..

I went with the lighter weight chromoly steel flywheel (ebay) and liked it just fine.

The even lighter aluminum flywheels make the car even quicker to rev. The reason I didn't go with an aluminum one is that higher horsepower turbo cars need the damping effect of the extra weight to protect the transmission. And I intend to keep pushing the power upward.

As for clutches, I have the ACT HDSS, but that level of torque holding capability isn't necessary for a non-turbo car. I hear that the Flyin' Miata clutches have an increased holding capability without an increase in pedal effort and are very reliable. The 949Racing dual plate organic clutch is very light and will make the car rev like a motorcycle, which can be a lot of fun, but they are a little pricey.

Stay away from the Spec brand clutches. They have a terrible reputation.

I had an 8lb Aluminum Fidanza, the feel was terrific, but really introduced an annoying buzz in the drivetrain when coasting. If I had to do it over, I'd go with a lightweight steel version. May not be 8lbs light, but they make driving an enjoyable experience, especially on a Miata.

I have the FM Stage I clutch, and it feels great. If you plan to stay stock though, and the OEM is a cheaper option, I'd stick with that.
