LOL, my car is 1/98 or 2/98, I forget which. Definitely an early 99.

what? I thought everyone knew they made 1998 everywhere else. Don't people import them and race them in spec?

I think it all has to do with VIN assignments. Those built in 1998 were assigned '99 numbers in the US. I do not believe that there were any 1998 VINs assigned, but I wait to be corrected.

3/98...that's what my door tag says on my '99.

Aren't the NBs in Europe 1.6s?

its an option. Or perhaps I should say the 1.8 is an option.

They definately made 98s, but there was a major design flaw. Some idiot put all the steering wheels on the wrong side. Best friend drives a 98 1.8 in england land, looks identical to mine. Oh and it doesn't have OBDII port, just an OBDI port under the hood.

thats because obdii wasn't adopted in europe till 2000ish

Yup, didn't mean it as a flaw, just sayin that's another difference.
