Just saying hello
Hi all, As my name says, I'm over 60, and I've been working on cars for most of my life.( started with a 1953 Mercury). I've owned a smurf blue 1990 Miata for about 15 years now, and have loved it. The car is totally original except for the wheels off my son's 1994 M edition. This car never ceases to amaze me. The paper stickers are still clean on the shocks after 165000 miles. I do plan to do the timing belt/water pump this winter, and any advice will be appreciated. I'll try to get some pic loaded later. Thanks

Welcome to the forum.... Sorry I didn't see it yesterday ( I was 67 years old :)) Today, I'm 68!
My MSM has 227,000 miles on the chassis now. The engine was recently rebuilt. Several suppliers offer kits for the timing belt / water pump replacement - FM, Goodwin, and likely Miata Roadster. Each are firms with very good reputations and support. There are several how-to's on various forums for doing that work. I would suggest looking at the specialized tools (a cam lock and a crankshaft lock) FM has for doing that job. They aren't NECESSARY, but do make the job easier. You'll likely do it - you sound experienced - but replace all the gaskets on your way out. Oh....I'm not that familiar with early NA's. Is it a short nose crank? If so you might want to inspect the key slot for wear. There is a fix - involving a specialized Locktite product - if you have an issue. Enjoy, take lots of pictures and post your procedure. |
