always had a thing for them... but is it just too old now?

mgeoffriau 08-08-2011 10:52 AM

I kind of love it just because it reminds me of the hideously cheesy car posters that covered my bedroom walls as a kid.

Would look best with some dark red lighting and a mirrored surface to sit on.

MF-Brain 08-08-2011 10:53 AM

I'd rock the crap out of it. Would look good with my $$$ belt.

FRT_Fun 08-08-2011 10:56 AM

Would drive.

y8s 08-08-2011 11:22 AM

give me big lights on the fenders or nothin.

Stein 08-08-2011 11:29 AM

I would give it a "like". Love is too strong for this car, at least for me. Might move to "really like" if it wasn't a vert. Vert sports cars are just wrong. Heavy, with extra body flex thrown in for good measure. Give me a hardtop Miata and I would gladly rock it over a vert.

Fun to window shop. But I draw the line at looking at anything over $50k when really I should be drawing the line at about $23.62. Pizza tonight, starve for rest of the month.

Gearhead_318 08-08-2011 01:25 PM

I'd have the 911 Carrara RS America for the money. The slant nose Porshe is cool too, but eh.

y8s 08-08-2011 02:24 PM

Rick, are you shopping for a grocery getter?

I sold all my toys :(

Just looking.....

sixshooter 08-08-2011 04:03 PM

My buddy sold a clean red '88 Targa with a built engine and $$$ suspension for 14k last year in Atlanta. Cast a wider net.

Doppelgänger 08-08-2011 07:09 PM

All convertable 911 and the targas are just so ugly compared to the lines of the hardtop cars. That RS is pure sexy time.

Bit dated for me. There are certainly some nice ones on eBay for cheap cheap.

I guess if i was spending 25 in that year range I would really need to consider something like this

2002 Porsche 911 Carrera Coup

https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1313035924

And if im consider that age of car and what i get for the price, i certainly would need to check out this

First is the interior, it's like Ford outsourced the interior to Tupperware, theres quite a bit of plastic. Second is the way you sit in the car; in the miata you really sit "in" the car, almost like a cockpit. in the mustang you more sit "on" the car. Granted, I noticed this after moving my dads car and when I lowered the seating position it did feel a good bit better. Last time I drove the car I didn't think the handling was that bad, but then again I was DD'ing a pickup at the time so I didn't have anything to compare it to.

I know you said the C5 was a bit dated but...
Dodge Viper

Lotus Elise
350Z/Infinity whatever
Saleen/Roush mustangs (05+)

My dad is getting old nowadays, he's looking into "touring" cars. He needs that 93 RS, NOW!

Realisticly though, price needs to be closer to $20k instead of $30k. I told him c5 z06! Comfortable enough on longer rides(compared to a miata). Decent mileage on the highway. Some trunk space (compared to a miata).

I never really liked the slant nose, I like the famous round high-light design too much.

Saw one of these sitting outside the local "Pretzel Factory". It was this color too. I have never seen one in person, but thought it was hot ----.

This is my fav car right now I like it more then the 911 its small light and almost as fast as the 911

thirdgen 08-11-2011 12:53 PM

I really like that car a lot. I told my wife that if I had a stupid amount of money, I'd sell the miata and buy one of those. She said, "yeah right, you'd LSx the miata and keep it, don't talk so dumb."

I like that your wife is comfortable using "LSx" as a verb.

I think the Used 2000 Dodge Viper RT/10 Roadster for
$25,000 in black isnt a bad deal but I think its less car than what my '06srt8 Hemi was and the Viper has more mileage.... again, it is old. Its soon to be a 12 year old car. When I sold my foxbodys i said NEVER AGAIN!. I do like some refinement in a vehicle, I do like A/C and ---- not to fall apart every time I drive it.

The Elise. Yes, that car is pimp. I am a big boy though, perhaps a bit too big for that. Not sure how it compares to the Miata but I dont fit well in a Miata (no long trips for me.. lol). Question, the Elise ever come in tiptronic? I could see my wife rocking that. Downside, our son is 2.5 and still requires a baby sit so its a no go. They are priced very competitively IMO.

Mustangs over all.. i have been there and done that although all with Foxbodies. For me I am more drawn in by the community than the car itself, or at least in this instance pushed away more. Locally speaking, many Mustang owners are complete dickwads. It is as if they have something top secret and valued like gold..... that was how it used to be. I put so much distance between them and me that in the end it ruined the whole car experience anyhow. I didnt want to drive it cause i didnt want to speak to a Mustang enthusiast because i had become so tainted that i never gave a ---- and anything I had to say was nothing but negative bs.

All of what I didnt want pushed me to buy the SRT8. But it sat around and was used to daddy duty once in a blue moon. If the car is going to sit it might as well be more bad ass and exotic.

350z is lame. I dont like anything about them.

There is so much appeal to big HP. LSx Miata would be sweet but how many heavy modded cars have characteristics like a new car? Almost none, or at least none that I have owned. I am being picky. I am being picky cause i say i will wrench but i wont. I want to buy it and be made fun of for paying for it instead of busting knuckles (lol). This is Canada, there arent many 'real' shops so going to a real custom car is not the road I want to venture down again unless I get good with the v8m Miata crew and I start buying beer and pizza + wings and have everyone come over and educate me.... I would then kill the first person that says "should have bought a new car Rick". lol

RedTurboMiata 08-11-2011 02:27 PM

go with the stang, cast your net down toward Tennessee\Georgia area. the cars from that area have less rust then up our area.

Mustangs driven by douchbags...

I've heard that the Viper the the polar opposite to refinement, I do not think the Elise ever came with anything other then a normal manual, and an abnormally large percentage of Mustang owners everywhere are douchbags, this is a fact.
You
can
get a non-Z06 C6 for around 25K (American $) w/ less then 50K miles, I saw a 05' on autotrader for $26,9xx with 25,xxx miles.
There are 1st gen CTS-V's, LS2 (400hp) GTO's, BMW M3's/M5's, RX-7's, Supras, EVO's and WRX STi's to be had for around $25K, maybe NSX's, and Pontiac G8 GT's too.
It's good to be picky, it helps make sure you'll be happy with what you get.

Doppelgänger 08-12-2011 03:36 PM

For 25k and a 4-door with low(er) cost of ownership, I'd go with a really nice EVO. Basic mods puke out reliable power. Sure a E39 M5 would be fun, but for what it'll cost you to put a decent intake and exhaust on it, you can run circles around it with an EVO.

saedrin 08-12-2011 04:36 PM

lol, my next car is going to be an E39 M5. Ever since I drove one around a year ago I've been in love.

(coming from the guy who used to build evos for a living, too.) :)

Gearhead_318 08-12-2011 04:44 PM

As much as I would like an EVO/C5 Z06/C6/STi/Supra Turbo, I have a sneaking suspicion that these aren't what Rick is after.
I think for reliability, comfort, fun, family hauling etc. the CTS-V or GTO would be the way to go. The M\\\ cars are have all of the above but they would be more expensive to insure & maintain. The EVO might be a little harsh, but it does have 4 doors. The STi I've heard is less harsh, so that might be worth looking into, it also of course has AWD which would be nice during the winter.
