A few thoughts on downloading music.

So for some reason I have been on a Beatles tangent as of late and realized that I've lost many of my CDs over the years, so guess I need to buy The White Album AGAIN.

Pop onto the interwebs and find that Amazon has the it for for 18.99 and the other albums for 9.99, but no MP3/downloadable version. Turns out, Apple has exclusive rights to ALL their music and wants 19.99 and 12.99 respectively. :bang:

WTF.

Corporate greed. The physical version is cheaper than the non-tangible digital copy. And I'd be willing to bet that Ringo won't see much of the money I would spend. If it were 5-8 dollars for the album, I would spend it.

So here I am, jamming to Strawberry Fields...

I did not spend any money today.

RedTurboMiata 04-08-2012 10:11 PM

i use internet radio, youtube, or the radio. because i am cheap.

you aren't the only one. Its about time we gave credit were its due, we need to overhaul the copyright and patent system so the REAL genius behind it is the one who owns it.

MF-Brain 04-09-2012 07:55 AM

its ok, they were already listening to this board and all of our conversations. Among the listeners are the NSA and on a frequent basis, the FBI.

flying_solo 04-09-2012 12:58 PM

sadly to some extent what you say is true Joe. But, the NSA/FBI don't go after downloaders. That's MPAA/RIAA and their private investigators.

US government does!

flying_solo 04-09-2012 01:20 PM

They aren't going after the downloaders of mp3s there individually and that's what I was getting at. They have and do go after copyright violators and anything even remotely related to sick ass kiddy porn. But, normally they stick to the larger scale stuff like that website. Diesel downloading the Beetles is more likely to be caught by the MPAA or RIAA seeding a bit-torrent or trolling IRC/Forums etc for info.

My security is a couple years behind though, so things could have changed recently.

Track 04-09-2012 01:28 PM

yea, but its not the US governments job to pursue copyright infringement which is generally a civil crime.

As for kiddie porn, thats just a cop out the US government is trying to use. Which is a similar cop out the MPAA/RIAA would (and still does) use to get judges to agree with them about the legality of a website. Copyright infringment and kiddie porn are irrelevant issues (unless there is copyrighted kiddie porn)!

but yes, I totally understood what you were trying to say Adam, I am just playing devil's advocate.

flying_solo 04-09-2012 02:07 PM

I agree it's a cop out, I'm not defending our corporate run government.

But, I am for snuffing any and all avenues for Kiddie Porn. Problem is, that requires filtering/censoring somewhere and when you start looking for trouble you find trouble.

ZippyMX-5 04-09-2012 05:56 PM

They still sell CDs?

But for real who pays for CDs/Movies/TV shows these days? :D

FRT_Fun 04-09-2012 06:11 PM

I've purchased a ton of music. The only thing is I don't listen to the super popular stuff most of the time, so it's usually not 19.99 for a CD. I think usually I'm paying 3.99 for 10-12 songs. And I DON"T use anything apple related. Amazon, or smaller stuff for the small bands.

dieselmiata 04-09-2012 09:46 PM

And that's the crux of the issue. Most albums are around 8 bucks to download. I have no problem doing that, but no way in hell I'm going to pay 20 bucks for a 40 year old album.

*disclaimer for feds watching. I did not download the album. I had a friend drop off the CD and copied it.:p

flying_solo 04-10-2012 08:13 AM

Archived to your computer more precisely.

Considering Apple is involved in a huge e-book price fixing lawsuit right now, this surprises people??

I use pandora. ----'s free and installed on my phone so I can use it in the car. Anything I really like I either buy (basically small artists I like to support with actual money) or download illegitimately and hoard on an encrypted array. ---- you RIAA.

Track 04-12-2012 02:31 PM

I am a frequent pandora user also, but it can get a bit repetitive and boring sometimes.

flying_solo 04-13-2012 09:35 AM

Small White Car 04-22-2012 01:00 PM

dieselmiata 04-22-2012 02:38 PM

But can you do it in a car?

That'd be intetesting, eh. An in dash record player!

flying_solo 04-23-2012 10:14 AM
