FRT_Fun 1997 Bare Bones NA Build (MOAR PICS NAO)

So this is my old red Miata. The first one I bought. It previously had the FM Turbo kit on it and was fairly awesome.

I then got too greedy and went for a high boost build and lack of money resulted in a part out.

A year later I'm starting to rebuild it. This time the goal is weight reduction and NA. Not planning on making a lot of power, I want simplicity.

Body/Interior: Bare bones. Removing anything that isn't needed. 1 Seat. Custom Dash. Hardtop. Welded in roll bar. Sawzall approved.

Electronics: Megasquirt. Unsure of which one at this time. Built from scratch engine harness. Built from scratch lighting circuit. Fully tucked.

Engine: Stock 1.8 tuned for efficiency to start. A rebuild and some power adders after I get a baseline.

Suspension: Stock for now. Cheap ass coilovers eventually. Then maybe real suspension.

Drivetrain: RX7 clutch type differential, 4.1 gears.

Pictures will be up soon.

I've since cleaned up the first subframe and replaced upper/lower control arms with poly bushings.

This is the RX7 diff. The nose will be ditched for a miata style one and then installed :D.

The hood? Don't worry about that hahaha.

It's from a previous failed project. May be modified for use with this car.

absRTP 08-03-2011 12:05 PM

ok, I was really wondering what might have happens...

FRT_Fun 08-03-2011 12:06 PM

There was going to be a scoop put there.

FRT_Fun 08-06-2011 07:50 AM

Anyone have any suggestions to help make my softtop removal easier?

shuiend 08-06-2011 10:56 AM

It is not that hard to remove the soft top. I really think it is just a few bolts if you are taking off the frame.

FRT_Fun 08-06-2011 11:37 AM

Excellent. Well I will find out today!

FRT_Fun 08-07-2011 05:41 PM

Yes, very easy. 3 bolts on either side, then about 12 that wrap around the back. Took 15 minutes because I didn't have power tools.

Got some stuff done yesterday, good progress.

Stuck on a seized control arm bolt so gonna have to play with that a bit. Still need to replace the upper control ball joint on both sides. Once that is done I have to run a brake line on the rear subframe that broke when I removed it, and clean up the grim. Then the subframes should be done. Although I still have to assemble my RX7 LSD and mount it to the subframe (going to try and put the diff in the subframe before I install the subframe.. this could be fail.

Before I put the subframes back I am going to paint the engine bay. Most likely a dark grey color. Once that is done I can install the subframe and work installing all new brake lines. Going to reroute them more efficiently in the engine bay. Then install all new SS brake lines going to the calipers. Reinstall the disc brakes, calipers, and wheels and then I've got myself a roller again :D

Trying to get to this point in the next 3 months, which judging by my funds and time is realistic.

Once it gets to roller status, I can fit the engine and drivetrain and begin to put together the custom harness. That I forsee taking many many hours. At some point while doing that I'm gong to build MS. Once the harness is done I should be good to go! I'm hoping for that to be the last part.

shuiend 08-07-2011 11:09 PM

So what type of condition is the softtop in?

Are you planning on running ms3x?

absRTP 08-08-2011 06:30 AM

remove the seats and the center console, if nots already done!

Already done ;)

Only 1 seat going back in. No console, probably some sort of custom guage setup.

Soft top was in okay condition. Usuable. Nothing I'd make someone pay money for.

I just picked up a MS1. Don't need anything fancy. Going to keep this car stock.

FRT_Fun 08-15-2011 11:47 AM

Got the MS!

Need to rebuild the Diff ASAP now!

Mazduh 08-15-2011 03:32 PM

Concerning the softtop, would you be willing to sell the front part, that connects to the top of the windshield? I wanna get the Gstring top eventually so having an extra one of these will come in handy.

FRT_Fun 08-15-2011 04:26 PM

^Show picture.

FRT_Fun 08-16-2011 05:08 PM

I forgot my camera at the shop so no pictures today. But I got A LOT done.

Everything was removed from the engine bay and interior... EVERYTHING.

Engine bay painted.

Subframe fully assembled (minus rotors).

Subframe installed.

Cleaned shop.

This weekend I will probably not get much done... probably prep the interior for paint. I need to purchase some stuff and I've used up my monthly allowance for car parts already :(

Forgot I took this on my phone...

The red part below the windshield will be painted as well, ran out of supplies. Still have to do another coat on the bay.

If my harness gets here this week I will start work on that this weekend.

Only the first coat of engine bay paint is shown here. Still a few more to go so you can still see some spots.

After the rain rail pieces are removed and the bolts at each side are removed, get a friend to help you lift it off from the opposite side:rolleyes:

From the pics you can see I already removed it. And it took all of 5 minutes. Had no idea it was so easy. Guess the hard part is installation.

FRT_Fun 08-20-2011 11:30 PM

Moar tomorrow....

Rear subframe may be mounted.

Alright so today I got some stuff done. Was super hot so only a few hours worth.

As far as I can tell the interior paint is finished. Lightning is bad so will bring a light tomorrow and touch up any spots I missed.

Engine installed so I can start test fitting the harness and various othe parts.

Mounting spot for the MS. It will be insulated when it is actually installed.

Basically all engine sensor wiring has been run, now I need to solder/shrink to connector and I'm DONE with engine wiring. Still need to tuck/protect it after that, but won't be doing that until I know the wiring is good :D

I know I"m going to get a face full of haterade when I mention this... but headlights will be fixed in the up position.. yea yea aerodynamics, it looks ugly, blah blah blah... I like it FFFFUUUUUUUUUUU

FRT_Fun 09-17-2011 09:32 PM

Not perfect, but simple. Only what is needed is there. I added to extra wires for my oil temp and eventual EGT stuffs.

barebones build is so tempting for my 01... except i need cushiony seats and air conditioning and quiet rides for my soft ass.

Tach will go in the middle. Have not decided where my speeedo will go. The two empty spots will soon be coolant temp and EGT. And by soon.. I mean after it's running.

Panel on the right will house my Ignition switch and push start. As well as accessory switch. Probably lights and turn signal (turn signals will go down by the shifter so it will be easy to reach... thinking about doing a time delay type deal with just a button... press it and the signal goes on for 20-30 seconds. Might get annoying at left turn lanes at stop lights.)

bigx5murf 09-19-2011 03:00 AM

considering the level of dis-assembly its in... be a shame not to just v8 swap that thing lol

FRT_Fun 09-19-2011 09:23 AM

If I had a way to weld and better work space I definitely would. Right now I'm working out of a storage unit with a spotty power outlet located outside and about 10ft away.

FRT_Fun 09-23-2011 10:42 AM

Tach obviously still needs to be mounted. And only 3 of the gauges are there, but you get the idea.

I've been getting the MR2 ready for sale. I finally got the roll bar off, had to pull the gas tank (FML). This weekend I'll be out of town. Next weekend I'll be meeting Tom to drop off his new Fit and get my new NB. I'll try and get in there on Sunday.
