saedrin's turbo NB
Greetings gentlemen, here will be my official build thread.. First few (edit: 3 pages, lol) posts are copy-paste from another forum, just to add some content.
This car is my daily, and has been for 6 years. I love the crap out of it, and will never, ever sell it. I beat it hard, put it away wet, and modify it for function only (looks like crap, don't care). It's my Millennium Falcon, if you will. Anyways, on to the thread. First post after this is about 14 months ago. AND GO. |

So I've had this car (2000 LS) for... 5 years now. Progression of modifications went from full bolt-ons (+2whp), to simple suspension (H&R Race, KYB AGX), and then added the FM Extreme happy meal. Car was still slow as balls, but very fun to drive. I've decided I want more power. Coming from a DSM/Evo background (other car is ~350whp DSM), I'm no stranger to boost, and the Miata seems like the perfect platform for some turbo fun.
So thus my power build thread. First a list of what I have to install or already have installed that are relevant: Corksport MSM front mount intercooler and intake MSM turbo (+ full AN lines) MSM waterpump inlet XEDE 99-00 Ecu Synapse Engineering Synchronic BOV/CBV (+ recirc fitting) Hallman Pro manual boost controller MSM 6-speed transmission (pickup this weekend) FM Extreme happy meal clutch and 10lb flywheel RB Race connecting pipe and Roadstersport 3 muffler (temporary exhaust) New rear main seal, random cleaning and re-rusting to do on the subframe and chassis Exhaust will quickly be replaced with a Begi MSM downpipe and a custom 3" v-band system that I can reuse when I upgrade turbos down the road. Also on the list to purchase is a new set of injectors once I'm comfortable with turning the boost up past wastegate pressure. Anyways on to the pictures. I've already started so you're not going to see any pre-build pictures (sorry) but I'll do my best to capture this as I go along. Engine out, time to get to work. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851673 Engine bay, needs some de-rusting and I'm going to weld the pinion in my depowered rack. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851673 Engine out, still has the markings from FM salvage on the cover. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851673 Relatively clean in the back, going to hit the rest of it with some brake cleaner to get the gunk off. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851673 Oil feed takeoff, forgive the ---- filter. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851673 MSM waterpump inlet. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851673 FM Extreme happy meal, could use a light resurfacing but I'll probably just deal with it. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851673 Should be able to handle the heat from anything I ever upgrade to. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851673 MSM Turbo, replacing the drain with something that actually fits this week. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851673 Back side of the turbo. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851673 Pile of random parts, wideband, filter, fittings, BOV, MBC, etc. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851673 Dash, Defi metric boost + JDM tach. Going to try to re-crystal mod this car when I get my wideband installed, hopefully when I move to the GT2560 or something I'll be able to make power up there. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851673 And that's where I'm at so far. This weekend I'll be picking up the MSM 6-speed from a forum member in Kentucky, then everything goes back together and I'll start harassing Begi for a base map. |

MSM 6 speed transmission (thanks dustinlib)
https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851705 Repaired speed sensor (hint: make sure all connectors are disconnected when ripping drivetrain out) https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851705 Tomorrow I'll mock up the turbo drain, drill and tap the pan, and repair some wiring harness damage in the trans tunnel. Also going to remove my steering pinion and take it to work for welding to remove the center slop, and order new exhaust manifold studs and nuts as the stockers just pulled the studs out of the head and are now one solid piece. |
3 Attachment(s)
Good news, I was able to salvage the exhaust studs with an hour of hard work and swearing with assistance from a hand torch.
https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851742 And then I drilled the oil drain... https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851742 https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851742 So later this evening I'll clean out that drill hole of shavings and finally install the turbo in its resting position. |
7 Attachment(s)
Oil drain fitting installed, pan cleaned, and everything torqued up.
https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851776 Turbo attached for line fitting. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851776 How the drain is routed, I'll fab a bracket to make the line a solid downhill slope. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851776 Coolant lines, yes they're a bit long, but functional.. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851776 Oil feed, probably should have gone with a strait end to have the adapter be at the ideal angle, but this will work fine. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851776 So on tomorrow's list, I've got a bunch of wiring to repair, and the transmission to reattach. Slowly but surely making progress on this thing. Trans wiring is screwed, have to strip the harness here and extend the connectors. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851776 Oil pressure sensor... just ends. Stupid connector got mauled off, so get to fix that too. Also going to roll the car out and hose this ---- off the subframe, then do some rust stripping and repainting. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851776 |

Turbo is in the final position, lines hooked up and turbine outlet attached.
https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851808 Installed my new rear main seal, a mild pain in the ass but I'm hoping this will be fine for another 100k+ miles. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851808 Coolant line feed and return, anyone see anything wrong with this routing? https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851808 FM Extreme + 10lb flywheel reattached. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851808 Andddddd.. the best part, 6 speed trans is bolted up and ready to go. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851808 Going to drain the trans/shifter, finish the wiring repair, and then drop this stuff into the car and pray later this week. |

Small update, got some little things sorted out.
Repaired oil pressure sensor, wrapped it with electrical tape after this and hopefully no more problems here. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851841 Small surface rust problems, I sanded down the stuff that looked bad, and just sprayed everything else with Krylon rust remover black. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851841 https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851841 https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851841 https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851841 Then went and did the same with a couple brackets and the driveshaft, all of which looked nasty. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851841 Hoping later I'll get around to finishing up the prep and tomorrow I'll start putting the engine back in. |

Engine is ready to go into the car here.
https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851876 Mild clearance problem with the dipstick and the coolant return. I'll rape it into position. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851876 Speed sensor installed. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851876 Wiring repaired. One of the two connectors that was messed up (the large, two prong one) was ruined so I just said screw it and cut it off. It's either the neutral switch or the reverse switch, both I can live without. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851876 Reassembled the rack. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851876 Going in, this is a serious PITA with one person. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851876 Where I sit today. Tomorrow I'm having a friend stop by with fluids and a spare set of hands to get this thing in and bolted up. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851876 Turbo! https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851876 Looking forward to this running, have my base map from Begi and XEDE is installed, hopefully I'll get everything good tomorrow and start enjoying it. |

New co-pilot and shift knob.
https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851908 Engine bolted in and everything hooked up minus intake piping. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851908 Synapse Engineering BOV https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851908 Coolant leak problem, the MSM outlet is longer, making the cross-over tube not fit on the exhaust manifold, so it pops out and leaks. :( https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851908 Needs to line up and it doesn't, getting this welded in place on monday. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851908 Moar shift knob. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851908 |
4 Attachment(s)
First serious problem, Corksport FMIC routing for the MSM apparently uses this hole behind the driver's headlight, but the MSM headlights are much shorter where the 99-00 lights are longer, meaning I can't use the drivers side headlight until I get NB2 lights.
https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851944 Also missing this coupler for the turbo inlet, apparently they expect you to reuse the stock part, which I don't have. Have a 90* on order.. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851944 Need new exhaust bolts to put this back together, in my infinite wisdom I lost the old bolts. Off to lowes... (don't hate my stock downpipe, it just wants to love you) https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851944 Last problem I can think of, is the BOV and the air-return for the Corksport intake are 1.25" and .75" respectively, and it's 100% impossible to find a silicone coupler this size, so I ordered a PVC reducer. (can you tell I own a DSM?) https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851944 Hopefully that crap will be in tomorrow and friday so I can fire it up and drive it around a bit. |

Got some more work done today, lots of little stuff I needed to take care of.
Re-welded coolant pipe tab behind the turbo, now this thing actually stays in place, and at least doesn't leak coolant anymore. (at least while the car is off..) https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851975 BOV in position, we'll see how I manage to pull off the air return.. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851975 Stupid MSM intake temp sensor hole is where I want to source boost only for the BOV's Port C, clearly I cannot find the right connector for this. (you try finding a m8x1.25 to 1/8" hose barb, I dare you) https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851975 Boost controller ready to control the raging torrent of power from my tiny turbo. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851975 AHA. I found a plastic thing that nearly fits, came with the BOV. So I carefully covered the threads with sealant and screwed it in. Think we'll be good here until I can figure out something more legitimate. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851975 Yay fitment problems. Corksport made the FMIC piping about 3" too long. Awesome. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851975 Nothing a little hacksaw can't fix! https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851975 'Ah' you'll say, 'the coupler has no lip to grab on to anymore!'. Feast your eyes on some JDM as ---- JB weld beads, I'd take better pictures but I don't want anyone copying this lost art. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851975 Stupid headlights. I'm going to rock the pirate look for a while I think. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851975 At least the FMIC piping looks good, and actually fits after I remove all of the stupid MSM-specific brackets with a sawzall. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851975 FMIC piping fixed and in position, mailed a dead horse's head to corksport for the trouble. (actually that sounds like a solid idea..) https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312851975 So slowly getting there. Probably be ready to go on monday as I need to wait on a few small hoses and ---- to finally ship. |

Probably about time, as the last one had like 20k on it. :| https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852007 Battery with my awesome tie-down method. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852007 Waiting for another 2.25" coupler for the FMIC, BOV tubing, and that should be it. Minus the new headlights of course, but those aren't necessary to test this out. |

So it's been a while since my last update. Most of that time was fixing little issues and generally waiting on the funds to purchase some needed parts.
Where I left off: https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852037 As the car sits today: https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852037 Today my new set of Deatsch Werks 440cc PnP Injectors arrived, so I just had to tear into the car again. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852037 Love the attention to detail with these injectors, who actually flow benches every single brand new injector anymore? https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852037 Latency value might be more important to someone with a full EMS, still nice that they include this information. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852037 Stock pink-top NB injectors (205cc?) vs. Deatsch Werks 440cc https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852037 The man who designed this fuel rail needs to be shot in the face. Repeatedly. I just love taking my intake manifold apart to access this stuff... https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852037 New seals.. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852037 So I uploaded my map to the XEDE, changed my scaling to .943 (thanks to Stephanie @ Begi), and promptly went for a drive. With boost set around 10psi the power is absolutely ridiculous compared to before. I cannot believe how I drove a miata without a turbo for 6 years. Also installed a 323 GTX PCV valve, though I still need an adequate PCV hose to actually use the thing. Still on the list to fix is the stupid airbag warning light (the airbag is most certainly attached), heater hose replacement and thermal wrap (pinhole leak), and fix a misfiring issue I've been having. Betting this is the coil pack or wires as the plugs are brand new and haven't solved the issue. |
7 Attachment(s)
Replaced the heater hoses today, the rear hose that goes around to the back of the block is a serious bitch to replace. Getting a pair of pliers or vice grips back there to remove the clamp requires patience (of which I have none) or tiny hands (nope), so I settled for copious amounts of swearing and general rage while mauling the hell out of my hands to remove it.
https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852072 Buttoned back up the intake side. Still need a vacuum cap for the intake pipe instead of duct tape. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852072 323GTX PCV Valve https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852072 Kinked oil drain line. Going to try a PVC pipe wrapped around that bend to keep it flowing well tomorrow. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852072 Bad Cam Position Sensor is causing me random misfires during cruise once the car is warmed up. Have this on order from finishline. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852072 Random picture of my Defi sending unit. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852072 STILL having airbag issues. When I connect the airbag to this connector it's still giving me a 6-flash warning on the dash. I don't know what this means. :? https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1312852072 |

Way overdue update.
Car has been 100% reliable since the turbo install. I beat the ---- out of it daily and it doesn't care. So yeah, there you go. 6 years of ownership, 1 year of boost. Not sure how I lived the first 5 years. ;)
Next: RADIATOR, 01+ front bumper/MSM lip, replacement trunk lid, 01+ rear lights. Then 3" exhaust, brakes, and seats. Then I'm 'done' until I can afford XIDA CS's. |
Love your build zack... So when I go bigger turbo your comin with right?

I'm pretty damn happy with that with a stock downpipe. :D Oh and I fixed my steering wheel center cap. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1315277249 Also passed 120k miles on the way home. :) |
