Schade's NA Miata

Thought its time to make a build log for my 96' Miata. Got it April of 2011.. I was so happy.

https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1326015354

Forgot what it had on the ticker then. I think it was around 94000?

https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1326015354

she came with these weird Borbets.. I had this cheapass attitude and bought NB Rokkors and got 20 mm spacers from my uncle.

https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1326015354

https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1326015354

Ended up with this.

https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1326015354

https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1326015354

Eventually my ignorant self got some 15x8 0 offset XXRs and painted em white.

https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1326015354

With a Touge Run lip, I achieved this:

but then my track fiend friends got to me..

https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1326015827

https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1326015827

..and I grew tired of scraping and crawling around. I impulsively traded my XXRs away for some 15x6.5 slipstreams. (which I will get a good pic of soon)

For Christmas, I received a Momo Devil steering wheel and a hub as well as a short dildo shifter. Crappy pic:

I don't drive her during the winter. The radiator had a leak so I ordered a koyo automatic oem replacement from eBay. Stuck and I really don't know what to do to it now. Raised the car this past week too.

you can just plug up the transmission hole thing and use it. its not a big deal that its automatic OEM replacement.

lookin good though, when do you plan to get out to the track?

I intend to use the automatic radiator, didn't know about plugging the transmission hole thing though. I bought it on purpose because I read that a lot of spec miata drivers recommended it.

I seriously dont know if I can even make it to the track this year, Track. There's a lot of prep work involved and I'm too broke atm. Maybe I'll do some autocross events with Mazduh, Shane and the others though.

Question: Friend is welding me a spec roll bar in the summer -- will it add a lot of weight? Its gonna suck having barely any hp and then adding weight. -__-"

MF-Brain 01-08-2012 12:15 PM

why bother plugging it?

flying_solo 01-08-2012 02:54 PM

Looks good Schade.

flying_solo 01-08-2012 03:06 PM

For track events, I plan todo a couple gingerman test and tune days. They are during the week, low traffic and under $100. I've know a couple people that have done it. Gingerman is a nice track and not too far from us. Last year some m.net guys did a meet up there, I just couldn't get away from work.

Thanks for the praise. :)

Those 3 friends of mine are Gingerman regulars. Thats where I plan to lap if ever in the future too. There are events such as WangFest hosted by ProFunction and the West Michigan Honda Meet that goes down every summer.

When you say during the week, do you mean Monday through Friday? Making it to a track day is still a long shot for me, seeing as how I'll only have a set of falken zi-ex'es for this year. So new tires, a brake setup, my timing belt & water pump... everything adds up lol. Maybe if someone's willing to lend me some tires I'll try and go.

I don't know, what is so special about the automatic radiator? I thought it had another tube to go to the trans, so what do you do with that?

I don't know how, but I'm guessing it has something to do with it slightly having more fluid capacity. as for the tube for the automatic trans -- I found this on M.net :

http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=353162

"No need to do anything with them. They are just the ends of a short spiral tube inside."

Track 01-08-2012 07:29 PM

cool, learn something new every day!

Schadenfreude 01-09-2012 01:18 AM

well.. thought about things real hard and I finalized my goals for my car. Hopefully everything comes into place :)

Excited about the radiator coming in this week. Can't wait to turn on the ignition.. It feels like forever.

yep, just a little extra capacity and a trans cooler.

I'd still probably go with a cheap generic all aluminum radiator.

flying_solo 01-09-2012 09:35 AM

What are you goals going to be?

Well, building it for the 94-97 Miata class of WCMC events so will most likely consist of suspension parts, I/H/E, megasquirt, a jdm intake mani down the road, simple & clean exterior theme. wheels. and then eventually i'll do some hpde.

not to harp on the topic, but you really should do atleast 5 or 6 hpde events before you tackle suspension stuff. suspension is really complex and its hard to visualize until you get some experience with it.

For example, with stock suspension you don't have enough camber so you wear the outside of the tire more. but under "normal" circumstances, you want enough camber to wear the insides more.
What rates are you going to go with for the speeds, traction, and aero available to you?
bump stops? shocks (adjustable? or not)?
what about sway bars?

how do you plan to adjust for too much under/over steer? what are possible reasons for too much over/under steer? how do you know when you are being a -----?

Here is a really good example of the situations:
http://www.miataturbo.net/showthread.php?t=62319

sway bars, tire, tire pressure, camber, toe, spring rates, shocks, rake, and weight distribution.

Every one of those terms will change the balance and handling of the car at some point in time (arguable caster also does), and understanding when they take effect will greatly help you in making tuning adjustments and also in buying parts department.

Look at it this way:

your car has a performance limit this high:
---

---
^and your ability to drive (no offense its just an example)

So why add go fast parts now, if you can't "use" them till later? And then when later, you will just want to change them because you may or may not have made a good decision on buying a part (or choosing spring rates, etc. etc.).

just my very long-winded 2c on the topic.

I know that basically you're telling me to take it for how it is and just drive it out there (after tackling the maintenance of things of course). Thats exactly what I intend to do. My post above just shows some foreshadowing though I didn't mean that I was going to start buying parts immediately. Thanks for your input. I'm not changing anything until after some events, but I am making sure I have an icehawk alignment to start with. I appreciate the thread link. Bookmark'ed it and will be reading it later. I'll be asking you a ton of questions for sure, Track seeing as how you're one of the more experienced when it comes to high performance driving events. I did however make the decision to keep the rokkors until they blow (being a cheapass college kid) and replacing them with Stance adjustables so I can control the dampening this time around. Really wish you were by the Chicago area so I could invite you for some ride alongs at events and you could tell me whats up.

Track 01-09-2012 12:40 PM

I appreciate it. I am not so sure I am good enough to help you that much, but I certainly don't mind sharing what I have learned and found out, whether its experience or links to threads.

I would just stick with what you got and drive it. if you got money to burn, use it on a track event.

Lol that's an improvement.
Waiting for a friend to get his track tires so he can sell me a set of falken zi-exes (205-50-15) with excellent tread for $150 which I will use to wrap my Slipstreams with.

RedTurboMiata 01-09-2012 03:12 PM

thats about where mine sits, and thats as low as mine will ever be. i would rather have a good ride over just being low

Schadenfreude 01-09-2012 03:22 PM

Yeah. I'm done holding up traffic at railroads and going around speed bumps.

Track 01-09-2012 03:43 PM

love the garage posters!! MJ and Beatles. good ----!

Schadenfreude 01-11-2012 05:31 PM

sigh.. found 4 rust bubbles and some small cracks in my rear passenger rocker panel.. first thing i'm getting done in April when winter's over. saving up.

high of 50 today so I got rid of that kept the lip on in a ghetto fashion (shhh i know i know -__-") and actually screwed the damn thing down. better fitment and looks more stable. ^_^;

that radiator still isn't here yet. we're getting 5-8" of snow tonight. fml.

flying_solo 01-11-2012 07:03 PM

If you need a radiator to run and the NB fits, I have two spares.

This finally got here.. but it started snowing so I'm feeling lazy. Decided I'm gonna defoam my driver seat when it warms up too.

Track 01-12-2012 03:49 PM

Do you guys think Koyo makes "uncomplete" radiators?

Awesome.

Track 01-23-2012 09:08 AM

what front lip is that?

MF-Brain 01-23-2012 10:02 AM

looks like the Garage Vary... or the Tounge Run replica.

Schadenfreude 01-23-2012 11:24 AM

Its the TR lip lol I read on reviews in some places I dont remember that its more forgiving than its fiberglass counterpart..

Mazduh 01-23-2012 11:59 AM

I'm sure it makes a great plow for all the snow! :D

I don't drive my car in the winter so I haven't tried lol. Its off by a fistful off the ground though unlike 3-4 months ago when I was being ignorant with the whole thing.

danke schön
