Hood Vents

My Car Brings alot of air into the engine bay but has a hard time getting the hot air from the exhust manifold and turbo out. Cspence uses a z34 Lumina Hood Vent on his car. heres his http://www.miataturbo.net/forum/t33438/] Build Thread what im going to do looks like this.http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...a/IMAG0116.jpg
Am i dumb for cutting into a great aluminum hood, or should i just go for it.

bebenecio 08-01-2011 10:55 AM

In my humble opinion...don't. The roundish front and your perfect hood don't deserve it.

RedTurboMiata 08-01-2011 11:27 AM

the hood is almost perfect, the paint needs attention. But i cant drive it on the freeway because the heat from the turbo builds up under the hood and gets pulled into the motor. this is my thought to solve the problem.

Would you paint them body color? I think if you left them black it might not look so good. Maybe try finding a hood that's not in that great of shape, like mine :D

I agree, the black might look a little tacky :/

RedTurboMiata 08-01-2011 03:07 PM

well, when i do it the hoods going black primer. cant afford to paint the car right now. but eventually it will be body color.

I think its bad ass, I want to hear how much it helps.

RyanRaduechel 08-03-2011 11:37 PM

Get some red spray paint and paint it please! Otherwise it looks great. Just get some "banner red" I think its pretty close. I wouldnt mind cutting my hood up cause its already been beat to hell. (High schoolers boots, and a large chunk of asphault) But you are brave.

Full_Tilt 08-04-2011 12:04 AM

Im not so sure that was the best place to put them. The pressure is lowest on the leading half of the hood, as you get closer to the windshield you get higher pressure due to the transition of the hood into the windshield.
This is why the "hood tilt" is so stupid.

^Correct. It'll vent heat, but will not act much as an extractor (helping air flow through the heat exchangers) in that area from what I understand. For reference:

the paint is to faded to match unfortunately. we put it there so we did damage the main support of the hood, it should still help keep it cool.

I'm sorry if I don't understand this, but you are saying the car is not driveable at highway speeds due to under hood temps? Perhaps there is a cooling system issue that can be resolved before you cut even more holes in the car?

There are cars that make significantly more power than a Greddy kit, and are able to maintain highway speeds. Seems like you are chasing a symptom and not the cause.

RedTurboMiata 08-17-2011 09:05 AM

bad radiator and thermostat, but the air filter pulls from near the turbo. so i wanted to get the hot air out from under the hood. And it does make a significant difference, while driving.by that i mean you can actually touch the hood after a long drive, before you got like 3rd degree burns.

this info might be useful to you, at least to show where heat builds up in a boosted miata.

i got to build some heat shields still.

Do you have a coolant reroute?

I doubt he does. He said he has a bad radiator and a bad thermostat? Why not add a larger capacity radiator and a new thermostat? I'm bewildered and think there are pieces missing from the story.

The very first question should have been "do you still have the factory radiator undertray and ducting?"

RedTurboMiata 09-13-2011 01:51 PM

the radiator and t-stat have been replaced along time ago. i now have a 2core auto radiator. need to install an oil cooler like yesterday. the undertray is long gone and the PO cut off where the under tray connects to so putting one back will be difficult. it dosnt get near as hot but, when its hot and hummid itgets warmer than i like. and i just liked the look of cspences white one on miata turbo

sixshooter 09-13-2011 05:12 PM

Doing it for looks is just fine. If you want to cure an overheating problem like the one you mentioned, sealing the mouth opening in the bumper to the radiator is of primary importance. Secondarily, an undertray behind the radiator is known to make a notable difference. After that I highly recommend a 53mm Mishimoto or equivalent radiator as it will have better than twice the capacity of the auto trans radiator. Then I would consider a Kia waterneck reroute.

But even with a big 53mm radiator a Miata would possibly overheat without any ducting before and/or after it. It is just how the Miata was designed.
