We were out riding around over the weekend and pulled into a small town/more a spot in the road.We stoped at the small store to get something to drink and a snack.
I stayed outside and walked around a bit while the wife went in
The wife comes out and we get in and as we start to leave she says the girl inside ask if ours was a 96 and I told her yes it was.
She said the girl told her she had a miata that her granddad had given her years ago. She also said it does not run but I loved that car and drove it till it quit
The wife did ask her what year it was and she says it is a 1986,the wife said you mean a 96 and she said no a 86 it was the first year they came to the USA and my grand dad purchased it new
she said I would not get rid of it as it was his
I have no idea but did a miata hit in 86 and could I possibly have a find if I can talk her into selling it
Or does she have the wrong year

She was likely confused on the year. The first Miata's that hit the showroom floors in the U.S. were in 1990, but had a build date of 1989.

I did a lot of looking on the Net and that was the earliest I could find as well. I am going back and talk to her again and see if I can get a look at it.
I did consider that maybe she meant the first year one could be purchased and sent here
