Default Awful engine miss

SO, AFTER OUR CLUBS FIRST RUN OF THE MONTH, UNDER BEAUTIFUL SKY & 80 DEGREE WEATHER, WE STOPPED FOR A "POTTY BREAK". WHEN READY TO GET TO THE SECOND HALF, I STARTED UP MY 97 BUT HEARD AND FELT A VERY DIFFERENT ENGINE! VERY ROUGH RUNNING, LOUSY ACCELERATION AND TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, A "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT FLASHING AT ME! PEELED OFF AND HEADED TOWARDS HOME, SOME 60 MILES AWAY. GOT OFF AT MY HOME OFF-RAMP, STOPPED FOR THE LIGHT RED AND THEN PROCEEDED ONTO MY BLVD. TOWARD HOME. MUCH TO MY SURPRISE (and joy) THE ENGINE WAS NOW BACK TO RUNNING LIKE A WELL-OILED CLOCK! CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STILL AGLOW BUT GOT HOME WITHOUT ANY MORE ISSUES. ANY OF THIS SOUND FAMILIAR? I AM DUE FOR FRESH PLUGS BUT EVERYTHING ELSE UP TO PAR. ENGINE WAS REPLACED ABOUT 30K MILES AGO WITH A JAPANESE ENGINE & NEW RADIATOR. I WILL HAVE IT CHECKED OUT BY MY MECHANIC ON MONDAY BUT WOULD APPRECIATE ANY THOUGHTS, THEORY'S.
