Hey guys I am new to this miata forum, so i figured id share the little intake project i just built. So heres the deal i could buy an aftermarket one for 200$, find a stock one which most people were asking over 90$ or build my own. I went about finding some aluminum online and ordered some 2 3/4 inch 1/8 in wall 6060 aluminum. I got a 90 and 45 to complete the project, below are some pictures....

Started with sizing up the first piece to the TB, cut about 3.5 inch off.

Prepping the lip to be welded back on.

Didnt want to scratch the aluminum with wire brush to remove oxidation but instead cleaned it thoroughly with acetone. Aluminum is extremely sensitive to contaminants and wont weld well if not clean.

Prepping the 45 to go in that will attach to the AFM.

I will next be making a stand to hold the MAF box up and attach it to the body right below. Fun little project and saved a lot of money compared to buying an aftermarket one. I will continue to upload my fab projects as i go along on this miata.

Sixshooter, it was supercharged and i blew my ecu so i said bye bye to all of it and now am converting all the wiring and bits and pieces back to stock/ lightly modified. Santia are you talking about the AFM at the end of the intake?

 

Yes! is that an aftermarket housing or is it factory? A friend of mine has a miata i believe it's a 2001 and it has one of those. He told me it is less restrictive than the one i have, which is a simple one like the one i attached. he is trying to get me to find one because "it gives you more power" which i doubt.

Its a factory AFM and it the later miatas they designed less restrictive ones. And as far as power gains probably not much haha.

 

Yeah, the black plastic MAF sensors flow better than the cast aluminum AFMs, but they are not interchangeable because the AFM has other functions within it as well. An AFM off of a 1.6 car can be swapped for an AFM from a certain year of RX7 for a slight (very slight) improvement in airflow. It's not worth it, IMO.
