Noob questions

Seats I wana see whats popular for track/road car I'm not a skinny dude so nothing too small.

Roll bars Whats everyone using I know a welder so I might get him to make me one if its cheeper then $600.00

sway bars I have no idea

I'm pretty much a noob so go easy on me I havent done many installs myself in the past but I wana give it a try on this car.

FRT_Fun 08-03-2011 04:30 PM

Roll bars... mostly Hard Dog, but I think there are some Boss Frog ones around. Welded is always good assuming it's done correctly.

Sway bars... I liked my FM one up front.

k1e1v1i1n 08-03-2011 04:32 PM

ya everywhere I look I see hard dog roll bars but they arnt cheep I was thinking of getting one copied . I have no idea what FM is

sixshooter 08-03-2011 06:39 PM

I've got a Hard Dog M2 Sport Double Diagonal. They aren't too expensive, especially if you get a single diag. Or you wait for something used to pop up like I did.

The extremes are much pricier.

Mazduh 08-03-2011 07:31 PM

I think I understand what your asking... But then I don't. I'm just confused. Corbeau seats are nice and cheap. I was going to go with a set of clubmans myself before I went another direction. I did have the fx1 pro's but they barely fit my NB.

As he said hes not a skinny guy, and fx1 pro's are pretty small. For example, an Fx1 wide in my friends s13 is pretty tight on me, and im 5'9 172 lbs, so use that as your reference point. Also if an FX1 pro barely fit your NB then a wide would be a stretch because they are like 4-5 inches wider or so. Just FYI.

FM is Flyin' Miata

As for seats, I use MOMO Starts. Decent price and a nice fit. I had my cage custom built :) could have a bar made also.

Zel 08-03-2011 09:43 PM

Used roll bars and cages do pop up on occasion and it might be worth it to wait for a known quality piece.

jared8783 08-03-2011 10:58 PM

supercharger? what kind
what year miata are you getting?

k1e1v1i1n 08-03-2011 11:02 PM

1990

To be honest I dont know much about this stuff i am going to learn as I go its called autorotor from bell eng.

jared8783 08-03-2011 11:13 PM

sweet i have a 90 as well and learned along the way and still am learning

well since you got a 90 you are going to wanna read this

http://www.miata.net/garage/hsue/crank/loctite_1.htm

and this
http://www.miata.net/garage/crankshaft.html

and finally this
http://www.miata.net/garage/hsue/LoctiteCrank1.html

the loctite fix can be done as a preventative measure, and if you are going with forced induction i would highly recommend it

i would do lots and lots and lots of reading before you stick the sc on there, just to make sure you know what you are doing

this is a new site the guys from miataturbo.net started this up a few days ago
so you can get some very good info from people on this site when questions do arise

jared8783 08-03-2011 11:16 PM

and that loctite is an engineered fix. if it were me i would replace the crank nose bolt and perform the loctite fix and be sure to properly torque it shortly after getting the car

k1e1v1i1n 08-03-2011 11:26 PM

the motor is 20 years old u think its going to fail now? I guess I can look into it I will see when I go to install the SC but I have a feeling it wont be till snow falls unless my friends get real motavated.

jared8783 08-03-2011 11:38 PM

shoot my motor is 20 yrs old too lol only 74k
i think that crank thing happens often after 125k.
it depends alot on if the bolt has ever been over torqued or not

alot of people have reported good luck with the loctite fix on broken cranks
therefore i personally would feel confident if i were to do it as a preventative measure

i havent dont it to mine yet and i probably wont do it til i pull the motor in a year maybe a little more, im replacing mine with a bigger one, at that time i will loctite my 1.6 and keep it as a spare motor

MINIMALLY if i were to go forced induction on my 1.6 i would replace and properly torque that bolt, but while you are doing that you may as well loctite it. at that point i would be very confident in that motor

that is the only major problem with our cars i can think of

k1e1v1i1n 08-03-2011 11:41 PM

good advice you have any idea what the rear end can take hp wise I read somewhere it was the weak point.

RyanRaduechel 08-03-2011 11:43 PM

I also have a short nose crank in my car. Its FI (turbo) so no extra strain from the supercharger belt. I didnt loctite it. I did mine a little different as far as the key and key way are concerned. It had a damaged crankshaft key way. So I am trying this method and if it fails it fails. But curious to see if it holds up.

P.S. I drive the hell out of my car.

Ninja edit after seeing your post. Stock 1.6 rear ends can and will fail with stock power, ask me how I know. It depends on how you drive the car. If you are launching it, burnouts, donuts...etc will determine how long it holds up.

k1e1v1i1n 08-03-2011 11:50 PM

I'm getting old so I dont know about donuts but I do want to take it to the track I guess live and learn. breaking stuff is just a good excuse to upgrade anyways.

RyanRaduechel 08-04-2011 01:11 AM

Youve never spun donuts before?!

this would be doing a donut...although its kind of a lame version. (not me)

and by track you mean, dragstrip?

k1e1v1i1n 08-04-2011 01:19 AM

no im hoping to get onto a road corse but i guess i can go to the strip to get powned how would i not know what a donut is ?

sixshooter 08-04-2011 07:33 AM

If you have a friend build a rollbar and you ever plan on passing tech inspection at a track day, there are very specific rules about its construction, design, and materials. It would suck to spend money and time building one you had to cut up and scrap later.

NASA has rules that are on par with SCCA and most others: http://www.nasaproracing.com/rules/ccr.pdf

k1e1v1i1n 08-04-2011 08:38 AM

Ya I never thought about passing inspection I will have to look into that.

As a noob, it will be a good idea to run a spell check when you post.

A road course is the last place you wanna test things out.
A wall has never lost.

If you wanna skimp on safety, then, your life is your loss.
If you wanna go safe on the budget, then, there are several ways to accomplish that.

First, find a Spec builder. (That's Spec Miata).
Spend a $100 or so with him, and, pick his brains. Ask him about crashes, safety, what not to do, and, have your buddy learn from him.
Road crashes are very different from strip crashes, and, safety requirements are very different.

I found two Ultrashield seats, one Rally Sport 14" (driver's), and, another Spec Miata seat 15" (that's seat width), for $150 each.
Cost me another $300 to install them properly (safely).
Cage? Found one for $300, and, FedEx was wonderful enough to lose one of the bars (windshield).
Padding cost another $150 or so.

Don't skimp on safety. It's your life, you won't be able to redo it.

And, S/C (that's supercharger) when you just got the car? Do you even know how to drive the silly thing?
Have you taken it to autox to learn the balance and its handling?

Or, are you planning to be another AmericanM5?

I ment new to the forum and to miata not to life chill out a little I lost a "e" this isnt a very nice way to welcome someone new.

Alik 08-04-2011 10:48 AM

I'm chill as a cucumber.
It's your life and your ride, dude. And, it's your money.

Ask for input? Given.
And, a standard caution to go along. What to do with it is entirely up to you.

Peace! (and, chicken grease!)

k1e1v1i1n 08-04-2011 12:13 PM

np bud I will not be doing anything unsafe I like my life lol

every car I have owned in the past has had more power. I'm not worrying about if I will be able to drive it right now, I just want to get it and drive it stock for a while and add a roll bar of course the SC will get installed over the winter I'm thinking.

But I wouldn’t mind getting some seats and I will be buying new, I only got the SC used because it just happened to be what I wanted and it was local and cheap. I don’t mind ordering the seats or even the roll bar but I was thinking the roll bar was gona cost me a mint to get into Canada.

I live on the south side of the Canadian border, but I find that shipping even large, heavy, bulky stuff by freight isn't all that expensive (Canada to US). Is there a big difference in going US to CA that I'm unaware of?

For instance, an engine/trans set shipped from Toronto ON to Nashville, TN is only a couple hundred bucks and that's using LTL rates (not UPS or FedOX).

As far as learning about safety, you can also go to the Spec Miata board and read a TON of stuff without spending dime one. They are road racers and have YEARS of experience on what works and doesn't. You can also sometimes find good deals on stuff at SpecMiataClassifieds.com.

Legend 08-04-2011 03:17 PM

Typically we get raped on cross border shipping stuff, so I always found it better to ship it to Lewiston then drive and get it, in bulk. For example, sending 4 tires from Penn. to Lewiston via UPS was $40, whoop di doo. Sending the same crap north would have been $200.

Nikwit 08-04-2011 04:12 PM

Another thing to think about for the bar is where it will be in relation to your head. I have a hard dog deuce in my car, and I couldn't hit it with my head if I tried. However, I installed the boss frog double-hoop designed one into my ex's car, and my head can't even touch the headrest unless I touch my right ear to my shoulder. If you are tracking the car only, then a more intrusive bar is fine, but if it's a DD (daily driver), then it would just get annoying.

As far as the 1.6 diffs go, I say replace it when it breaks. You can get another 1.6 diff, but the 1.8 diff bolts directly in (with new half shafts and driveshaft), and you can get a real LSD. Especially if you are going S/C, you are gonna want the extra grip.

Legend 08-04-2011 05:58 PM

Eww.

Get a Hard Dog Single/Double Diagonal and call it a day. They are ~$450.

k1e1v1i1n 08-04-2011 06:07 PM

God that is hideous looking.......

RussellT94 08-04-2011 09:01 PM

Yep, is hideous, is the Hard Dog Extreme. Is not SSCA nor HPDE legal.

http://www.bethania-garage.com/guide.htm

k1e1h1o1m1o1v1i1n, perhaps you should get the car prior to buying mods for it?

k1e1v1i1n 08-04-2011 09:43 PM

I just saw someone driving down the road with it I have no idea how that happend but ya its not that great and looks like not the best bars to hang a cam off either.

jared8783 08-04-2011 11:05 PM

just wanted to throw in my 2 cents and say that the bar keven likes i believe to be a beautiful work of art and if it holds up to autox standards i would like one as well

Gearhead_318 08-05-2011 12:03 AM

I got my hard dog double diagonal for $495 shipped from here, totally worth it.

k1e1v1i1n 08-05-2011 08:39 AM

ya that shipping dosent seem too bad I will have to take a closer look when I get home

Repeated for emphasis: Is not SCCA nor HPDE legal.

Not legal for track days.

OK I guess that bar is out
