2003 Miata sometimes won't engage first gear!

What transmission fluid are you using?
I switched to Redline Shockproof and it really made shifting quicker and easier. Heavy fluid makes it really draggy going from gear to gear.
But it really sounds like you might still have a disengagement problem. If your clutch disengages forward motion of the car at the mid point of your clutch pedal stroke then I'm at a loss for how it could continue to resist.

I am using this fluid (Genuine Ford Fluid XT-M5-QS Full Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid - 1 Quart). it cost me about 21 dollars a quart and i put two of them inside my tranny. I will be bleeding the clutch system again and see if it has any air in it. I will also be adjusting the clutch again since it seems to be engaging on the upper part of my clutch travel. I have read other threads about some new transmissions doing this because they were not used enough to properly break in some parts inside. My miata was a garage queen and the first time i saw it was 2 years prior of me buying it and it probably sat longer. Could it be that the tranny just needs some break in before it gets that smooth shifting. The notchy feeling can be described as when i'm shifting into first, i can feel as if i'm slighting rubbing too much against a surface, then i can feel the gear go in. Second gear when i am going into it, i can feel the synchro almost trying to adjust the speed, then i can feel it go into gear. Maybe this is normal and i am just confusing it with "notchiness" because if i use some light force the gear goes in with little resistance. My car has 73,000 miles and the previous owner said they haul the miata "the wrong way" all throughout Washington and Arizona. They used to haul it from the front wheels instead of the back so they diff ended up spinning. They believe the car ran less than 10k under its own power.
