Soft top issues
I'm a newbie...just bought my first...a 2000 MX5 Miata a couple days ago and I don't know too much about them. When I first got it I couldn't get the top latches to reach the windshield, so I took it over to a friend that has one. He got them to latch, but he said he wondered if it had the correct year top on it for several reasons...first, because the frame is supposed to go thru the top, not rest on top of it, second, because it was soo hard to get it to latch, and third, because there's a tear on each side in exactly the same spot. My question is if there is a way to tell if the top on it is for a 2000 or a different year? The car also came with a hard top, so it's not like I'm totally screwed, but there's a lot to be said to being able to just pull over and raise the top if it starts to rain verses having to run home to put the hard top on! Any info would be appreciated!

Looks like it’s time for a new top. Old tops that are left down for extended periods of time will shirk some and if tried to put the top up in cool weather you will have a hard time getting it up and latched with out much effort. Looks like yours shrunk to the extent of tearing.

Welcome to both of you!

It's definitely an aftermarket soft top. The NB1s came with a glass rear window. When those die, many, will replace it with the one you have, where the entire rear can be zipped out. Esp. If they also have access to a hardtop like you do.

The zip outs mostly came from earlier Miatas, but they technically still shouls work. But it's true, when they've been sitting for a while and esp. In cold weather, you can't just pull and expect to have it hook perfectly. They do contract, and a little slow stretching and warmth would coax it back.
