Cool Suspected VVT Malfunction

My 2005 NB has 93k on it, I have had it for a year. I drive it only on special occasions and have noticed that the acceleration is different when the engine warms up. There is a noticeable power surge around 3500 rpm when the engine is cold; it is not there once the engine temp is in the normal range. I suspect a problem with the vvt actuator, but I don't have a check engine light on. I put in a bottle of Marvel mystery oil recently with no real change yet. I have put on 100 miles since then.

I was confusing the vtcs system with the vvt. Now the vtcs is throwing codes. My vtcs has a single solenoid mounted on the butterfly shaft itself. What's the best way to deactivate the system?
