My fingernails and a lot of cussin'. I have to go back into the inside of that door to fix some other things the last "mechanic" broke. I'll try wiping it off with some mineral spirits at that time. I agree, that black adhesive is nasty stuff.

Smile!!

Send a URL to purchase "Cussin" from....... I'm going into my drivers side panel tomorrow.

Last step before verifying that my Grom I-Phone interface is dead. I suspect I'll be replacing the head unit with a new one, since a new head unit with twice the power, bluetooth and a USB port (rear face) is within a few dollars of a replacement Grom.

It does mean that I'll have to rethink where or IF I use the LED bargraph as a fuel gauge.

I'll rent you a whole bunch of cussin' at a very reasonable rate. Best of luck on the door-panel-otomy.

I've wondered what to do about the radio in mine as well. The Bose unit has a bit to recommend it, but at 75 MPH with lots of wind noise it is close to its power limit. I haven't done an iPhone interface but I did go with a Sirius XM radio, which allows me to project myself back to the '70s at will. I noticed that Clarion sells single DIN units which allow you to choose a display color. Nothing against blue LEDs, but I'd prefer to match the color of the Speedo & Tach.

For me, the rear output is important, since I routed my I-Phone cable to the door, near the trianular window, where I've placed a mount. This one, from Crutchfield, has considerably more power, a variable color display and a rear USB port that I can place an adapter cable in. It's also relatively inexpensive.....which is a biggie for most Miata folks.....like me.

I wondered when someone would bring out a head unit without a CD player. I put one of these on my Amazon wish list (they are leads than $100 on Amazon).

What sort of mount are you using for your USB cable?

It's a mix of components. I'll take a picture and describe it later today.
I have to go into work first thing this morning. <sigh>

Perhaps these will show the mount I'm using.

The I-phone cable comes from the AUX port on the back of the Bose head unit. Getting that cable thru the door / car body ports required some inventive use of a dremel tool - likely not required with the newest Apple connector.
It attaches to the vent window using an adhesive pad, which has not come off in 3 years!

Should you be interested, their newest products are available here. And.... NO, I do not work there or have stock in them!!

Nice setup. I hadn't even thought of mounting the phone like that, but it makes a lot of sense.
