Hi from San Diego
Hi All,
Just picked up my first Miata and its a real project. I got it from someone who decided he'd rather build a civic than a Miata, so he sold me all the parts he had in the state that he lost interest in the project in (which was scattered everywhere). It has the engine, trans and most of the engine bay gutted and removed. He had already replaced the breaks, coilovers, fuel pump (w/ high flow), most of the interior, bought most necessary for a timing belt and seal kit, and injectors (with rx8's yellows). The odo has around 120k miles on it and it hasn't had a compression test yet.
I've owned 20+ cars and built a WRX (stage 4), a 4Runner (crawler), and a few VW's (class 11). I used to be really involved with the Subaru community in San Diego (All Wheel Junkies) back in the day and most recently been working on my crawler 4runner. I have young kids so i don't get to go out with it as much as i wanted.
At this point i'm just starting to figure out what i want to do with it. I'm into clean quiet sleepers, so for sure on the list is a complete restore of the exterior, suspension work, bracing, and roll bar. I def love the red paint and want to restore it so i may have to take it to TJ to get the best bang for my buck. I really don't like the wheels so those have to go. On the engine side i obviously need a compression check to see where i'm at and need to make a decision of taking it back to stock or locating a turbo or supercharger. I'm leaning towards taking it back to stock and getting it up and running to see how healthy it is before i dump more money into it. I wouldn't mind building a turbo since i have experience with it but i really, really, really hate dealing with registration the 'fun' way. Also it seem like everything is either extremely expensive for some reason, out of stock or discontinued.
So what would you do? Keep going with the build or pull the pump and the injectors and put it back to stock?
Anything particular i should investigate right off the bat?
My list so far is:
* Roll bar
* Bracing
* All bushings and sway end links
* Sway bar (?)
* Wheels & Tires
* Paint
* LW Flywheel
* Upgraded Clutch (?)
* Replace rusted parts
* Seat (?)
* Header back exhaust (?)
* Upgraded Radiator (?)
* Power Steering (?)
