The Province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a Peel Regional Police cruiser and a car collided on Friday night near Sheridan Centre, seriously injuring an eight-year-old boy.
SIU spokesperson Frank Phillips confirmed this afternoon that the provincial watchdog, which investigates incidents involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault to determine whether officers should be charged, is involved due to the severity of the boy's injuries.
The boy, who was initially taken to a local hospital and later transported to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, is expected to recover, said Peel Cst. Thomas Ruttan.
Meanwhile, police and the SIU are looking for witnesses to the Erin Mills Pkwy./Sheridan Park Dr. crash, which sent two other people, including a police officer, to hospital just after 9 p.m. The officer, who suffered minor injuries, was released from hospital.
The boy's mother, who was driving the other car, a Mazda, was also treated and released.
Phillips said the SIU has yet to assign any subject or witnesses officers.
Anyone who was in the area at the time or who has pictures, video or audio-video recordings of the incident is asked to call the SIU at 1-800-787-8529
