Recommendations on where to learn to weld
 

I have been handicapped by having really useful family members for too long. When I needed something fabricated, I simply took it over to the farm and one of my Cousins or Uncles would whip me up something. Now, that's a few hours drive and I need to grow up and be a man. I want to weld metal!

Growing up I could learn about anything from a book. This, however; is a bit more intense and I don't want to burn my house down or take of any more fingers.

So the question is, where do I go to take some basic welding classes. I'd be willing to invest in some used equipment and practice at home. I'm not looking to start a new career or anything. Just lay some respectable beads down that don't crack off. The local Community College here doesn't seem to have anything I can find.

Ideas?

I've already cut off the tip of my index fingers. What's a little fire gonna do? Aaron, we need to talk, I am serious about taking some welding classes this summer/fall. The website sucks man, it won't show me dates or times unless I'm a registered student.

ps you have to have a fairly steady hand. again know from experience.

A BIG secret to welding is this,

PRACTICE.

Grab a book and read on what type of welding you want to learn, oxy, stick or mig/tig welding. All have their uses and none are that hard to learn.

Borrow/steal, hire a welder , some scrap material and practice till your little heart content. Ask a local boiler making shop or an exhaust shop if they would help in return for some liquid refreshment. Basically it's just practice that will make a decent welder.

And remember to wear ALL the proper PPS, nothing worse than welding all day in ya shorts cause it 120 degrees outside and you end up sunburnt all down the inside of you legs. Ask me how I know that one ;)
