Tim Allen and CR
Lets discuss this topic. What do you guys think? Should we be upset that he sold the forum to some outside source over a community member??
I am certainly very upset about that, but I want to know what others have to say. :ohnoes: |
i like the small business type setup, so yes im not happy about it. selling it is made him a nice bottom line. im also not liking the new admins tone in some of the posts over there, and admin is not personal enough for a tight knit community such as CR.

I don't really know what all the drama fuss is that goes on on CR since I'm more of a thread leech on there and only go too a few specific threads and rarely venture out.
The few times I've talked to Tim he seemed like a pretty reasonable guy. It seemed like a lot of the members were just complete tools. IMHO if I was the owner of a popular website. I have the right to do w.e the f*ck I want with it. Yes it's good to listen to you're community, but a lot of the bashing I saw going on on facebook etc I thought was uncalled for. Especially the moaning about the donations etc going into Tim's pocket and not toward the site. Course, I probably don;t know the whole story so my opinion can be changed. I also never had any problem with mods being twats etc. If you're acting like a twat, their gunna be a twat back to you if you ask me. |

Tim got paid. Thats what people should be saying. The corporate people arent in the wrong, its business. Its the same business Tim was doing before they came along. CR had been for sale for a long time, well before this went down.
Tim sold CR out. That's that. The people should bitch at Tim. CR wont change that much but it will change, for the better or worse, who knows. Members are welcome here but I personally wont be trying to steer them here as its not my style. This site speaks for itself. |
I lurked at CR, but never really participated. I just felt a little out of place there. From what I've read, it could go one of 2 ways. The forum stays the same, or it becomes an ad-infested bastard of a forum like many of the others owned by the same corp. It seemed to me that a lot of people were thinking that CR was going to hell in a handcart anyway. I also don't know what all is involved with running a forum, so I can't say if what Tim did is right for him or the community. Time will tell. I do know that getting big corporations involved rarely makes things better, and often drives them into the ground.

seems kinda shady but would i have done the same thing? probably.... money talks.
seems as though he fulfilled what he set out to do and was ready to let it go. |

Tim still owns other sites, one of them being small and locally oriented for the Tampa Bay area. He also bought into a small auto repair shop recently, from what I understand. But I don't try to keep up with him/them much.
Most of the time the members make the place and not the host (even though we are lucky enough to have a good host). I've never been attracted to CR simply because I have very little common interest with 50% or more of the clientele. My focus is typically oriented in a practical, functional direction for the betterment of speed and handling characteristics with a sprinkling of tolerability with regard to comfort. I appreciate an attractive car, but not a dysfunctional one, and I think that is where the chasm widens for me. |
