What is your diagnosis Ari on the cause of death? Do you think your rods just couldn't handle your baller driving and expert application of bad ass power at the track and experienced catastrophic failure?

99mx5 Apr 2, 2012 11:23 AM

Yeah, I think the rods just gave out.

were the rods pulled in this shot? Looks like the pan was still attached.

can you explain the rotation of #4?

99mx5 Apr 2, 2012 01:56 PM

The bottom end was not opened at this point. The camera flash makes it look rotated. If you look closely at the near side of the No 4 piston, the exhaust valve relief cuts are aligned with the block. The flash also shines on the No 1 piston.

No 4 (far right) is not twisted.

Poor rods. What do you think you were pushing power wise at the wheels?

RedTurboMiata Apr 2, 2012 02:05 PM

that rod never knew what happened, has to have been north of 250tq.

MF-Brain Apr 2, 2012 02:21 PM

oh okay. i was like WTF?!

you still had some major detonation going on and i think that's what ultimately killed them.

99mx5 Apr 2, 2012 04:05 PM

Yeah me too!

It's possible Scott. Just because I didn't hear any detonation doesn't mean there wasn't any. All I know is that the car ran really smooth.
I'll make some det cans next time to be sure. The sad thing is that I had the camera in the car when it happened and forgot to turn it on.
It would have been great footage.

MF-Brain Apr 2, 2012 04:35 PM

i mean i can see it on all the pistons.
