So boys.. look what just showed up...
http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1341494188 Beautiful piece, came with a raw aluminum finish so I pulled out the Mothers Billet Metal polish and went to work. An hour or so later.. http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1341494188 http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342209777 http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342209777 http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342209777 Yumm. |
Made some progress yesterday. Since I'm waiting on some parts to come in, I took care of some little detail stuff that I felt was necessary. The parts I did have were sexy but one of them didn't match...
http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342451955 The cast finish on the turbo wasn't doing it for me so I started to level it out for polishing. I'd like to end up with a decent mix of polished and black finished pieces under the hood. http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342451955 Then I figured why not take some of the bs casting marks and lettering.. So I proceeded to grind those away using an aluminum bit on my die grinder. http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342451955 http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342451955 I felt like it was a shame to get rid of the "GARRETT" name but it just didn't look clean enough to me at this point. http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342451955 I stopped and left "ARR" to add some humor to the job. I think it's appropriate for the build. http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342451955 After the heavy cutting was done with the aluminum bit and a number of sanding discs I moved on to a 220 grit wet sandpaper by hand. The polish by hand was getting to be a real pain so I made my own out of folded paper towel and an old sock zip tied around an old sanding disc. http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342451955 Shes not finished but it's coming along really well.. ARR... :riaa: http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342451955 On the Engine-removal side of things, I stopped to test fit my beautiful BEGi intake manifold. Looks like everything is about right here. They tapped the NPT fittings on the bottom side to keep everything looking clean and it certainly does.. http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342451955 I tossed the car up as high as I could achieve on jack stands to make the removal easy. http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342451955 Shes naked and ready to come out. I'd have pulled it already but a friend of mine borrowed my cherry picker so I'm held up at this point. http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342451955 At a stand still on the engine removal, I pulled the valve cover and started to prep it for the -8AN lines I'll be using on my new breather setup. I flipped it and removed the baffles. http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342451955 Then drilled it and tapped it for my 3/8 NPT to 8AN adapters. http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342451955 I also enlarged the internal passage for more bandwidth. http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1342451955 Cleaned up and I was out for the night. I'll be back tonight to pull the engine. |

My buddy gave me back the cherry picker for a couple of hours last night and I pulled the engine.
https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1342619299 She's looking good. This intake manifold is a beast. https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1342619299 Hopped on the phone with Stephanie from BEGi to discuss the build - She talked me into one of these with some ceramic coating.. She really had to twist my arm.. Hehehe https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1342619299 My understanding of the manifold is that it's bullet proof. Schedule 40 thickness on the material, cast elbows and an excellent flowing design. One of the bigger decision making factors of "build-round-2" was the heat! My previous setup was restricting, the turbo was tapped for power, my manifold was thin and glowing. The intake and exhaust sides were rather restricting when you consider how much air was being forced through the system. This setup is much easier on everything and the manifold plays a huge part. The thickness of the material alone will cut down on engine bay temps, on top of that it will be ceramic coated! https://www.miataforumz.com/attachme...ine=1342619299 |
What made you decide to pull the entire motor? Rebuilding the bottom end again?

This weekend I was able to make some progress on the engine bay. Since I’ve got some down time while I wait for BEGi to finish my exhaust manifold. I ended up with the .63 TiAL vband housing. The turbo should be able to make what I’m looking for with this housing on E85 with the other supporting items being installed.
http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1343050256 I’ve basically decided to move forward with spraying the entire engine bay to support the theory that I’m better than Fae at everything. I went through and removed all of the things. Brake lines, clutch line, fuse box, brackets hardware and just about everything else you could remove from the bay. Any rough areas I hit with a rust removal pad on my angle grinder. http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1343050256 From there I covered the exposed metal with some SEM self etching primer to ensure the paint would hold. http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1343050256 I filled up my touch up spray gun and set it to a pretty narrow spray pattern to hit the tight spots. Got through my first layer of base coat and called it a night. With another coat of base and some clear this engine bay is going to look extremely legitimate. A nice new home for my shiny BEGi parts. I feel like I’m a car porn producer. http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1343050256 Order from Deatsch Werks came in – Everything was packaged nicely and looks top notch. The injectors came with a flow testing sheet that showed results within accurate within .06% of each other. Also included is the fuel pressure correction and the voltage correction table. That should make setting up my Adaptronic for these new injectors fairly easy. http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/7900/img1136yj.jpg Pretty new parts. I’ll get these dropped in this week when I bolt up my BEGi intake manifold. http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/9496/img1137g.jpg |
sexy, do mine, do mine!

Last night I was able to get the rest of the base coat down and spray the clear - This engine bay is going to be some serious car porn.

Some new parts came in today. I decided to go with the Mishimoto Oil Cooler kit - It's simple and the hard parts are tough to mess up.
The oil cooler kit might just end up getting used with my Setrab oil cooler core but pricing out the -10AN line alone I couldn't beat my cost on it. The -10AN lines look premo though. The sandwich plate is not thermostat equipped but I figure between the factory cooling/heating jacket around the filter housing and the fact that I'm running a rather small core, I won't have oil tempatures on the low side. The catch can will see some modification before it's installed. I basically bought it just because of the size and it looks nice. Prior to installation I'll tap out a hole in the top and install a good sized breateher filter. My plan is to run my 2 -8AN lines from my valve cover into the existing ports on the catch can and the breather filter will be my atmospheric vent. http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment...ine=1343194533 This is just for the eye candy- By the way - Not sure if any of you cats are on instagram but my user name is "Modulation". http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/3312/imagextz.jpg |
