FRT_Fun 11-11-2011 02:42 PM

Looking good! Glad to see some progress!

Track 11-11-2011 04:43 PM

cool stuff! What brake upgrade? 1.8 brakes or something else? Tie rod ends and bushings?? thats a fun job. I would leave a weekend for that, cause those bushings are a pain in the ass if you don't have a press!

RedTurboMiata 11-11-2011 05:16 PM

i cant decide between the 1.8 setup or going to drilled and slotted, my best friends dad runs a small mechanics shop and he has a good sized press.

Track 11-11-2011 06:05 PM

drilled and slotted? I wouldn't go any farther than slotted if you do any track events.

You will see a lot more benefit from 1.8 brakes than you will from drilled and slotted. Plus, you just need rotors and the bracket for 1.8 brakes anyway.

don't do vmaxx man, they are not worth it. its like a more expensive rokkor/racelands.

You can go with a setup like I did, its not even $100 more than vmaxxx. You can save money on springs and go with summit springs instead if you like.

Bilstein shocks: $400 at tirerack or CHEAPER at parts geek
allstar sleeve: $16x4 at summitracing
allstar perch: $13x4 at summitracing
QA1 springs: $38x4 at summitracing (or cheaper)

dude thanks for the list. i was going to go this route but didnt know where do begin. i dont know much about spring rates, all i know is a good ride for some DD duty, and autocross and and track when i get to that point.

Track 12-07-2011 02:19 PM

I would go with 375/275 (or stiffer really, I like my 550/450, a bit rough on the cracked up roads, but everything else is fine). Supple, but compliant in the bumps. Get some really stiff sway bars for rolling resistance and that will make up for the low rates, but do keep in mind at those spring rates you can't take a big drop in ride height, or you will end up on the bump stops a lot, especially if your roads suck.

I would do no more than 1.5" drop at that spring rate, but that even be too much.

also, when you get the all star sleeve, make sure its the 5" one. the 7" ones are too long. Also the "kit" they sell is kinda gimmicky, it comes with a top perch that does nothing (I have them sitting around), so don't get the kit, just buy the "replacement" parts. I can provide you with links later, if you have a hard time finding them.

RedTurboMiata 12-07-2011 02:35 PM

cool, i would appreciate it, ill see what i can come up with.

RedTurboMiata 12-08-2011 09:57 AM

I am going to embark on a polishing spree, Cam cover, Intake, Throttle body. First im going to take the cam cover and intake to a local grave stone maker. they use a very fine media blaster that takes paint and such off very easily. the im going to work with some 500, 800, 1000 grit sand paper and finally a polishing wheel on the drimmel.
Est time 20ish hours

Bushings? Bump stops? Top hats? Might drive the price up a bit too much for his tastes.

he can reuse all of what he has.

I cut my stock NB bumpstops, used the two rubber bushings and bought some beefy washers (actually used the washers in the ES sway bar bushing set) to use on the bottom. I am about to do my alignment in the next week or so, so I can snap some pictures of how I got around that.

If you decide to move to NB tophats, buy the rubber bushings, but buy 2 of the flat metal thing, rather than buying the cup.

Thats per side btw. and don't forget the actual tophat. better yet, just buy a set of used NB tophats from CR, they go up all the time.

RedTurboMiata 12-10-2011 09:54 AM

Most of my upgrades are used parts, i usually dont have the kind of money to by new. so im just waiting for the right suspension to come up for sale somewhere.

curly 12-10-2011 11:19 AM

Nothing on his NA is worth using if he's upgrading to those parts.

I do not know man, thats his call tbh. I know a few guys on track with koni race shocks, GC sleeves and spec rates that still use the NA tophats.

I have an NB, this is a none-issue for me, but in any case, curly is right in that while you are at, you should just go ahead and move to NB top hats.

What's your suspension budget? Miatas have a tone of suspension options across a large budget spectrum. Check out this spreadsheet, its a bit outdated, but quite a few under $1k coilovers have been released since it was made.

FRT_Fun 12-14-2011 07:31 PM

I've heard very good things. With everything you get what you pay for. Obviously these are not meant for the track. But for a street setup it seems like a good deal.

RedTurboMiata 12-14-2011 07:49 PM

i need a something that can be good for 75% street 20% autocross, and 5% track. i havnt started track racing but this year is the year.

Tell me where, I'll update my spread sheet.

Feature wise, I think they're the best bang for buck. They're mono-tube, and have height and dampening adjustment. Decent warranty too. Only problem is, the reviews I've found are all from the slam crowd. But they do seem to be decent enough for street use, which is the majority of what you need.

Looking good ;)

Schadenfreude 01-06-2012 09:45 PM

I just picked up the same koyo rad (automatic) for 115 shipped.. Will it really hold its own if I decide to go for a mild boost setup in the future? I was thinking of a quick-spooling t25 pushing conservative 8 lbs. sorry for thread jacking I'm just really curious.

P.S. the build is looking great.

RedTurboMiata 01-06-2012 09:51 PM
