Looking forward to seeing what you do with this guy. Are you mounting it in the oem location or elsewhere?

Well, it was going to end up in the DIN panel under the radio, and still might. That is where it is temporarily for now.

Sebring update!
It was hot as crap out there. Concrete temp was 136*F. I didn't measure the asphalt temp.

Turbo failed in first session, shaft was wobbling and the thing was locking up. I wired the wastegate wide open and finished the day anyway. It still made 2 or 3 psi in the straights. I'm still looking into the root cause.

Car was overheating slightly during the middle of the day without the normal boost heat even being added to it. The needle would creep up from its dead zone just left of center every lap or so. More work to be done there. Shifting up a gear for a couple of turns would make it come back down so it wasn't bad. Straight aways are for checking mirrors and glancing at gauges. It was a good exercise. Always more work to do.

Turbo is partially disassembled. Shaft looks to have survived, but the bronze bushings are well worn. The shaft looks blued in the middle between the two bushings so it might be an oil problem. I put the oil feed line in a jug and cranked the car and oil came forth but I wonder if it is enough volume. I have no good way to determine at this time. I don't know how much is required.

The compressor wheel is shaved a bit around the edges but may prove reusable. The CHRA needs to come apart to determine which thrust bearings it has so the correct kit can be ordered.

How much trouble would it be to switch to a Garrett turbo if your china is not reusable? Will you have to redo the downpipe?

It will depend on the Garrett.

I think there was a lack of oil in the CHRA. I got it all apart last night and there was bluing due to excessive heat at the thrust bearing and at both of the main bearings. The shaft is fine, the compressor wheel is a little worn at the edges, and everything else that is worn will be in the rebuild kit I ordered for $39. Once I got it apart I could see which kit I needed.

Update time.

The turbo failed because the fellow at the hydraulic shop used an improper choice of hose to construct my oil feed line. It was a hydraulic brake line with an operational limit of 250*F and was designed for brake fluid, which is alcohol based. The line was not rated for petroleum based fluids. He made a replacement out of proper Teflon material rated for 450*F and with steel braiding for free, but I'm out a turbo over it.

The rebuild kit was a good idea but I should have inspected the compressor wheel better because it was bent a bit too much to reuse. That particular one had no cheap equivalent to purchase for replacement, so I just got another turbo.

I went ahead and had a really nice stainless braided Teflon drain hose made as well and had it covered with the high-heat silicone sheathing to keep it from rubbing through anything it got in contact with. Why not.

When do you plan to have it running again?

Did you have the hose shop in Plant City build the drain hose?

Soon, I hope. Tropical weather or not.

The hyd hose shop on MLK in PC did it. Nice guys but he cost me some $$$ with the screw up.

I just figured out that I never dropped this video here for you guys.

I really overcooked turn 17 coming out of the back straight one of those times through it and almost ate the outside wall up under the bridge (or slightly before it).

I never realized how many places Sebring had for you to bend metal while offroad.
